Tea Time with Liv

Stay On Task

Staying ong task is a challenge aat some point in time as a WAHM. Some worse than others but you need to find ways to work through it. I know do several things I should not just because I can be easily distracted. You just have to be aware of it and get back ontrack asap. I might find a typo on my website then realize I need to call a supplier about a shipment coming in which will lead me to remember its my mothers birthday then I have to do grocery shopping and back around again.
Here is a few tips to staying on task:

Create a task list on Sunday evening of all of your projects and deadlines for the week. Do not just leave this on our computer calendar. Write this down somewhere that you look often such as a desk calendar. The constant reminder helps keep you on task.

List your goals for the week. This should always be part of your weekly schedule of tasks. Having your short term goals listed keeps you in forward motion to accomplishing these. Make sure these are on mark to reaching montly and quarterly goals.
Create a schedule of the above in blocks of time. Stick to this. If you get distracted you know where you need to return based on your block of time scheduled.

Turn off the instant notification on your e-mail. This allows you to only receive emails when you are ready to read and respond to them them properly. Constantly checking email as a notification pops up takes away valuable time.

Use an egg timer to keep you conscious of time. Your will be surprised how quick time passes when you are made aware of time. Reset the timer for each block of time that passes and stick to your time schedule. This can be difficult at first but you will find you manage time better.
If you would not do it on the clock for someone else, don't do it on your own time clock. It is easy to get off task and run errands but keep those to your break times.
As a WAHM it is easy to get distracted with typical home noise. Keep the t.v. off. If you must see the show, tape it, dvr, or something but no t.v. while working.
Do not overfill your plate with tasks for the week. Too many projects will take you off task. Yes you have a lot to accomplish but overdoing it will not get it done. What it will do is create an exhausted you whom won't even be able to handle the tasks you would normally be able to.
Staying on task is work but as you become aware it will become habit for the most part. Business is every changing so it will never stop taking effort. It will just get easier as you find what works for you.

WAHM Tip of the Week

Have a bingo game happening in your area? Offer to donate a prize. Many of these have some sort of door prize drawing going on and this is a great way to get some exposure.

Achievement Takes Time

"Keep trying" is the rule that must be followed to be successful at anything.

Your success will always be connected with your actions. What you do today brings your one step closer or further from your goals. Just keep moving towards your goal.

You'll make mistakes but don't ever quit. We are human. You will learn from these mistakes. You may even have to hang on after others have let go.

Persistence means taking pains to overcome every obstacle, to do all that's necessary to reach your goal. In the end, the only people who fail are those that do not try.

Your future is a big adventure.
Just remember, all great achievement takes time.

Party To Go

Often when you're having a home party, there will be guests who would love to host a party of their own, but can't. Perhaps they're moving, their spouse won't allow it, they just don't have enough space in their home, or they are simply uncomfortable.

Give them the option of having a party in a basket. A party to go! This can work for almost any business you have such as candles, makeup, jewelry, food, tea, purses, and toys.

Here is what you can do:

Gather a selection of your lower to mid priced and popular items, package it so that the products look attractive but visible. Try organza or cellophane bags.

Make sure everything is priced and has an item number attached to it.

Arrange it all in an attractive basket. A large basket is best but keep it from being too heavy. You don't want to discourage your hostess. Keep the basket and fillers neutral so the product stands out. If the products are neutral do the reverse and add in colorful filler.

Enclose a typed-up inventory list which includes the item numbers and prices.

Have the hostess sign for the inventory in the basket, especially if you have included some expensive items. This not only protects your hostess but also yourself. Go over the inventory and count with the hostess before she signs. This also makes her aware of the products she has with her.

When going over the inventory sheet, educate your hostess. Not only will she know what she has but she will be able to answer basic questions.

Having an inventory list for each basket allows the hostess to not only keep track of what is in the basket but also allows her to sell the product immediately (only if you have this available). Have a check list on your inventory sheet so your hostess can check off items purchased. Make sure the hostess understands whether she can sell the items in her party to go basket or not. You do not want to sell important demo pieces because of a misunderstanding.

Also include catalogs, opportunity and hostess brochures, and business cards. Ladies love to look at catalogs or maybe they wish to share. Don't forget the male guests. Send them home with these.

If your business has samples available, include them. This allows party to go guests to take something home and try before they buy. Sometimes a guest is passing by quickly and does not have time at that moment to browse. Pass them a sample and let them know how long you will have the wonderful products available.

Have a basket or 2 available at home parties and invite potential hostesses to take a basket that day. Your hostess can keep the basket for 1-2 weeks to gain sales towards their hostess rewards program.

At the end of the party to go time frame, collect the inventory sheet, additional orders, money collected, and the basket. Tally the hostess shopping credit and allow your hostess to begin her shopping.

This is a great way to sell old or final stock. Make sure to note these are the last of the stock so these are not over-ordered.

Parties never have to be limited. Get creative and accommodate your hostesses needs.

WAHM Tip of the Week

Is that back of your business card blank? Add to it. Add a coupon, calendar, tipping guide, appointment scheduler, etc. Give your customer a reason to not only keep your card but to bring that card out from time to time. Get creative and create a business card that is also a frequent shopper card.

Create an Office

As a WAHM you are in business. To stay organized you need an area to do your work. Working at the dinner table or on the couch and coffee table is not an office. You need a dedicated space.

Not everyone has the luxury of an empty room but you can make yourself a corner of a room and turn that into your office. This should have a desk, pens, pencils, folders, computer, file cabinet or portable file folder box (can buy one at your local discount store for about $10). This is where you do all your work. This is where you make your calls, keep your schedule (a wall or desk calendar is best so you have instant access).

A small shelf with product, a basket for brochures or catalogs, business cards, samples, is very helpful. This can be your mini demo area when clients stop by.

Once a week take a few minutes to organize your area. Remove clutter, file loose papers, or anything else that needs to be done to keep your area tidy.

Purchase a comfortable chair. You want a place to sit and work comfortably.

Keep it simple. A work area with a lot going on can feel overwhelming. If you feel overwhelmed you will not want to work.

Do not eat at your desk. This is an easy habit to get into and we all do it at some point. The biggest reason you want to eat away from the desk is you need to take a break.

Keep office hours and work only in your work space. Being a WAHM it is easy to overwork. Keep to a schedule and close shop when it is time.

Think Big, Be Big

High achievement always takes place in high expectation.

You'll always hit what you aim for. So why not aim high?

Have the courage to follow your dreams. Its the first step towards attaining your ultimate goals.

If you can dream it, you can do it. But if you don't have a dream how are you going to make it come true.

Where Does Your Support Come From?

Starting a business is hard enough. Starting a business from home can be worse. You no longer have anyone to answer to. You are the boss. Having support is still required. Where does your support come from?

A supportive family and spouse can be hard to come by at first for many people. They may eventually come around but getting them on board is important. This is where a well laid out plan comes in. Not just ideas in your head but written down and worked out. This is regardless whether you are turning a hobby into a business or you are going to be a distributor for your favorite direct sales company.

For some without the support can be a deal breaker. How do you plan to deal with this? Have you thought about this yet? It is not something we want to think about but it can happen. You need to be prepared.

Support can leave down the road as well. Some may be experiencing this. Not to worry. Try inviting them into a day in your life. Show them what you do in a day and have them assist you. Let them see what you do. Some of the non-support comes from the not knowing. The more they know the better the chance you have at gaining or regaining their support.

Sit down with your spouse and discuss your new venture. Make sure to answer their questions and address their concerns. Just keeping your spouse in the loop is all you need to get continued support.

WAHM Tip of the Week

As a WAHM you are likely to have a spouse or significant other. Work and family can be a balancing act that love can often be left out of. Don't let that happen. One hour a week make time to spend quality time with that special person in your life. Watch a movie, sip a cup of tea and talk, play a game. Make it the same day a week and same time. Neither of you will forget and it becomes habit. This is one habit you don't want to kick.

Today is Tomorrow's Success

What you do today directly effects tomorrow's success. Every move you make can make or break your success. If you do nothing today, nothing happens tomorrow. Are you really willing to allow that to happen?

Success is not impossible but it is not easy. It takes work no matter how much or little you put into it. If you work it, it will happen.

Have you ever seen someone who didn't work have great success? Of course not. Even a scam artist works at it. Every successful person has a plan of action. They start with a goal and begin a course of events to reach that goal.

Every day you must do one thing to bring you closer to your success. That one thing should be making a new contact. Each new contact brings you closer to the sale you desire.

Whether you work from home or away you can't achieve success without doing something today that works towards that goal. Carry business cards and pass out one a day. If you do not get out everyday, make a solid contact every day online. Join networking groups. Meet someone new.

Make it your short term goal to make one step each day towards your goal.

The Key To Your Success Is In Your Hands

You cannot do everything, but you can do something.

Only you can make it happen.
No one can do it for you.
No one will do it for you.

Always accept the responsibility for your actions.
Always set a higher standard for yourself.

Choose the thoughts and actions that will lead
you on to success.

Your success is but a determined action away.

WAHM Tip of the Week

Have extra magazines laying around? Donate them to a office with a lobby. Add a large label to the front of the magazine with "Donated by" and include your name, business info, and contact information. Add a small pocket on the inside cover and place business cards inside. Donate these to your local Dr's office, lobby for your local tire, oil change, or mechanic shop, vets office, salon, or even a teachers lounge. Don't have any magazines? Ask family and friends to save these for you and pick them up.

Its Always A Good Time To Change

The first step toward getting somewhere is to decide that you're not going to stay where you are.

You're a product of your environment.
So choose an environment that will best develop you toward your goals.

Analyze your life in terms of your environment.
Are the things around you helping you toward your success or are they holding you back?

Your world today is a living expression of how you are using and have used your mind. It's something that you can change at any time.

You don't have to remain a captive of your environment.
Don't say "If I could change, I would change,"
say "I can change, and I will change."

Clothespin Game

As each guest arrives, hand him or her a clothespin. Tell them to attach it to themselves in an obvious spot, and each time they "catch" another guest crossing, uncrossing their legs, or a special word chosen for your event, they can "steal" that guest’s clothespin(s). This definitely keeps the party from getting too "formal". Whoever has collected the most clothespins at the end of your presentation gets a gift! This can be a simple keychain, candle (LunaWolfs Mystical Essence has a wonderful assortment of soy candles), giveaway bag (A mompack is a wonderful gift), or even a Gift Certificate.

LunaWolfs Mystical Essence

One of my favorite sights during the Christmas season is the luminarias lining the paths of homes leading from the street to the door. My other favorite is the smell of Christmas- evergreen, turkey, ham, cinnamon, gingerbread, and so much more.

Why not combine the 2?

LunaWolfs Mystical Essence can provide you with the wonderful scents of Christmas in the form of a votive for this years luminarias.

What is a Luminaria?
Luminarias are made from brown paper bags weighted down with sand and illuminated from within by a lit candle.

LunaWolfs Mystical Essence handpours some fabulous soy candles which are non-toxic, biodegradable, and natural.

Choose a wonderful scent such as Pumpkin Pie Paradise, Christmas Tree, Christmas Memories, Cinnabun, Gingerbread, or Candy Cane. Every 3-5 luminarias place a scented candle for a wonderful scent. You can even request unscented soy votives.

Don't forget this Christmas table centerpieces. Soy candles burn cooler and slower making these a great way to illuminate your Christmas feast.

Place your LunaWolfs Mystical Essence order by December 15th to receive your soy candles just in time for a Christmas Day gathering or even gift giving.

The Highest Of Distinctions Is Service To Others

The truly successful person doesn't use others, other people use them.

If you can contribute to others, no matter how small your talent, you too can become successful. The measure of anyone is the number of people that they serve.

Service to others is the essence of success. No one achieves success without being of service. All great men and women became successful because they gave some talent or ability in the service of others.

Everybody has to be somebody to somebody to be anybody.

Blogging Tips

I have come across some amazing blogs and I applaud those people for such great care and effort. I am always amazed at what is chosen as a topic and even more amazed at the facts presented for the education of their readers.

While I have come across some that are great, I thought I would offer a few helpful tips to those who are new and need a place to start.

1. Give readers a way to follow easily. Adding Google Friend Connect allows readers to stay abreast on the latest posts. While subscriptions and RSS feeds can help, you want to understand why you would use these.
  • RSS: This is a type of subscription that is used with a feed reader allowing readers to view all updates on various sites in one place (not exclusive to blogs)
  • Email Subscription: Sends notifications of new blog posts to subscribers email address.
  • Google Friend Connect: Allows readers to use Google Reader or Blogger dashboard to read latest blogs
  • Bookmark: This bookmarks a page for the reader to visit at their will
  • Networked Blogs: Allows readers on Facebook to follow blogs and receive Facebook updates on new blog posts. This tool is for Facebook only.
  • Social Networks: Some social networks allow you to connect your blog to your profile to update readers on current blog postings. This is usually an RSS feed.

2. Frequently add posts. At minimum post 3 times a week. Blogs that are not maintained can lose their readers.

3. Keep away from building a blog that is just one long ad. While you may be trying to sell a product you need to use your blog platform as a teaching tool. Blogs that are viewed as ads are not enticing and send readers away.

4. Proof read those posts. A simple slip happens but frequent spelling and grammar mistakes can be a turn off.

5. Find your niche. If you want to write about movies, pick types of movies such as family or romance. You can even get more specific from there.

6. Keep your blog clean and uncluttered. To many things going on at once makes it hard to read.

7. Customize your template. Using a free template provided by your blog host is not as attractive and does not set you apart from others. Do a search for templates such as "blogger templates". You can purchase a template or create your own.

These are just a few tips to get you started.

Happy Blogging!

Purse ABC's

Bring a bag of candy with you to the party (Hershey Kisses, etc.).

Tell guests not to eat the candy during the game. Call a letter of the alphabet, and the first person to SHOW an item from their purse representing that letter wins a candy.

Each person who wins, gets a piece of candy; the person with the most candy at the end of the game is the winner.

Only use about 8-10 letters or so, then stop the game and do your party demonstration.

You can play the second half of the game (the remaining letters) at the end of the demonstration, but this time the guests must ask you questions about your career and company to earn a piece of candy. Imagination counts. It could be a description of an item, the brand name, color, etc.

You'll notice that the same things can be called different names, but they all work for this game. It's a lot of fun to see what people think of when you call a letter. Sure to bring you lots of laughs

Get Organized

Like many WAHMs out there, you are doing your best to bring in a consistent and valuable income. The trend in the WAHM world of consultant and affiliate programs is an overwhelming amount of memberships to companies. The more you join, the more versatile your product offering, the more people visit your businesses, and the more money you will bring in right? While affiliate marketing (signing up for several affiliate programs) and/or starting several part-time consultant programs sound like the right path, this can spell your demise if you are not careful.

The most common thing we do is take all of our affiliate/consultant programs and place those banners all on a free website. After all placing these all on one website gives us a one stop shop that customers will love. They can find all they need in one place. That's why you joined so many right?

We join or start a business for many reasons but the main goal is money. Whether full-time or part-time you are in it for the money. Now you may be thinking how can signing up for so many spell my demise? Ask yourself this, do you place your links on a website and send out text ads and links to that site for people to view? What is on that site that will make people want to buy? You are ultimately sending them to a site that will redirect them away from your site. You are telling them go elsewhere to purchase. Does this make sense? This is network marketing and without a full knowledge and understand of this you will fail.

The idea behind joining several consultant and/or affiliate programs is great but many times you end becoming overwhelmed. You never give your businesses the right amount of attention which in turn never gives them a chance to grown and blossom into a fruitful venture.

If you decide to take on a few companies, get organized. This is essential to your growing businesses. First thing you need to do is create a schedule. Know how much time you are willing to give your businesses each day. This is important. You need to give your attention to your businesses 5 days a week. The term make your own hours does not mean just whenever you feel like it or when you decide you have time. You need to make time. Make a list of all that needs to be done everyday and get on that schedule. Find a minimum of 2 hours a day Monday through Friday for 1 business, 1 hour for each business after. These time suggestions are just minimum suggestions. Your real time requirements can be far more. Avoid the trap of 30 minutes here and there. When you do this it is very easy to push it off and even skip it. Find solid time. Make the time. You can't build a successful business if you don't give your business time.

Create a folder on your computer desktop labeled "My Business". On your desktop is the best place because this is always in view when you sit down and easily accessible. In your main folder create a sub folder for each business labeled with the business name. This is where you will store all pertinent information about each business including files. In each business sub folder create folders for customer lists, product info, account info, business templates (business cards, flyers, etc). Next make a list of all your businesses and store in your main folder. Note any requirements for each business as well. I suggest an excel file (if you are in need of a template, contact me for information). This gives you a quick reference guide.

If you are a WAHM with more than 5 businesses a strict schedule will be crucial to your success. You will need a daily outline of duties. While you may have decided to become a WAHM for the flexible schedule this does not mean you will be without one. Each day dedicate time to each business. A minimum of 1 hour a day per business. This is more than just advertising. This may be researching, learning about the products, planning a party, etc. If you have too many businesses to dedicate 1 hour a day, it is time to weed out the businesses that do not work for you. Stick to 2-3 at most.

Create a work space. This is important. Using the kitchen table is not a work space. Ideally an extra room is best so you can close the door after working hours. At minimum you need a corner of a room with your desk, computer, business supplies, and file cabinet. This is the only place you do work and this space is used for nothing else.

Take time to create a budget. Know your business needs and how to promote your business. How much can you spend each month without commissions. Know how you plan to spend that budget. Break it down per business and stick to it. Keep a tally on all expenses made with each business during the calendar month to stay on top of expenses.

Each week look over your previous weeks work and be sure you are staying organized. Clean your desk area to keep it from getting out of control.

Take a the extra steps to get organized and stay organized will help keep things running smoothly. Staying organized allows you a place to refocus when you get off track.

WAHM Tip of the Week

Many cell phone companies are beginning to offer navigation applications for your cell phone. These are very useful when getting directions to host parties, deliver product, or even find your way to the vendor fair. Not only will you get directions but you can calculate distance for mileage cost (tax purposes) and time estimates to ensure you will arrive in a timely manner. Check with your cell phone company and add this to your plan.

Take Some "Me" Time

As a WAHM its hard to separate work from personal. You are always on the go taking care of everything. At times you can and do forget about you. Its important to take some "me" time.

At minimum take one day a month dedicated to you. Do a little shopping, get a pedicure, visit a coffee shop and read a book, take in a dinner and movie with friends. Pamper yourself. Just do something that is about you.

Leave the kids at home. If dad can't take care of them, hire a babysitter. Having a me day with the kids is not taking "me" time. That is quality family time. Its not the same.

Don't feel selfish. You have to take care of you before you can take care of everyone else. The world will not fall apart because you took time out for you once in awhile.

There are no short cuts

Where the rumor started doesn't matter but the reality is there is no short cuts in business. Whether you are a consultant or business owner you have to work and build a business. There is no fast money.

Don't rush a business into making money quickly. Most times you will fail in some aspect such as customer service, product viability, and ultimately sales. Take your time to get organized.

Before you begin your business have a plan. Why are you selling what you are? What is your goal in selling your product or service? What are you goals in 5 yrs for your business? How do you plan to price your product or service? Is your pricing competitive? What is your target? How do you plan to advertise?

Starting a business is tough but with the right planning it can and will be fruitful. Don't cut corners. Do it right and do it right the first time. You will save yourself a lot of trouble from the start.

Pass the Gift

Games are a must at a party and what better way than to start off with a gift!

Use an inexpensive gift, such what ever your business can offer to the guest, (under $5 or $10)

Start by giving the gift to the hostess or person in the middle of the group and the game begins!

1. Take this gift and with out a sigh look around and give it to a person with brown eyes.

2.Yes, you are the lucky one for the moment, but let us all share in the fun! Please look around with eyes discreet and give it to the one with the smallest feet.

3. Your feet are tiny and oh so small, now hand it to someone very tall.

4. Please take your time and don't be harried. Give it to the one who is longest married.

5. You must be proud of your life, now please pass this to the newest wife.

6. Of this parcel you are bereft, give it to the one on your left.

7. The largest earrings I'm looking for now, if you are wearing them, step up and bow.

8. Now to the person with buttons... big or small, any kind, the most you can find, gets the gift this time.

9. Now don't get cross and please don't fight, but pass it to the person 3rd on your right.

10. We should stop now, don't you agree? This gift is yours to keep with glee!!!!

This is a great ice-breaker and really sets the tone for a party.

Have fun!

You Make Your Own Opportunities

Your destiny isn't a matter of chance, it's a matter of choice.
It's not something you wait for, but rather something you pursue.

Don't wait for extraordinary opportunities.
Seize common occasions and make them great.

Opportunities sometimes come disguised in the form of misfortune or temporary defeat.

Start where you are.
You're at this moment standing right in the middle of opportunity.

Act on your dreams and you can have them.

Plan for Success

You need a plan to find success. Wanting success isn't sufficient enough to get it. You have to create a plan of action of work towards success. Ask yourself, "What are you going to do to get the things you want."

Before you begin, what is your definition of success? Maybe it is having a big house. Maybe it means making a million dollars. Maybe it is selling 5 products a month. Success is different for everyone so define success for you.

Know what it is you want. Write it down. Once you have a direction you need to create a path. That path is what you are going to do to obtain the success you desire.

The obstacle you must overcome is to bridge the gap which exists between where you are now and where you want to be. This is where your plan of action comes in. You can't avoid having a plan. Trying to "wing it" will only hold you down.

Your plan of action should be a step by step plan. You cannot fail with a definite step by step plan. Each step you take will carry you along to the next step. All you need is the plan, the path to follow, and the courage to move forward towards your goals.

WAHM Tip of the Week

Create an office space. This should be strictly for work and not a combined place of use. You want this space dedicated to work so it is not overrun with family life. This can be a corner of a room or an entire room. Do all your work in this space and make it clear this is your work space.

Recruiting Game

The Recruiting Game

This game is designed to help you identify hot prospects. My belief is that any game you play should not only be an ice-breaker, but also designed to point you to potential recruits.

The first step is to assemble three Opportunity Gift Bags. To assemble the gift bags gather all the information you have on your opportunity, then add some special touches, including a gift. The gift can be anything that has visual appeal – a bar of chocolate, a fun gift you found at a dollar store or sale, or one of your own products purchased on special (do not over-spend on these bags. Presentation is the key.) Make sure you use fun gift bags so they have strong visual appeal and display them up front with you. This has two benefits. First, they will remind you that you have to find three people to give the gift bags to, and second, they will generate curiosity and a desire to ‘win’ one.

Next, introduce the game at the beginning of your party. Show the gift bags and tell guests that you are going to play a game. The winner will receive one of the gift bags.

Guests are invited to award themselves points as you call out the following categories:

* One point for each party you have been to in the last two years
* Two points for each party you have been to in the last six months
* Five points if you have ever hosted a party
* Double those points if you hosted a party in the last six months
* Five points if anyone has ever approached you about joining the business
* Ten points if you seriously considered it
* Ten points if you have ever been a Consultant or Representatives for a direct selling company

As you read out statements, guests award themselves points for party attendance, hosting a party etc. This exposes the best prospects to give your business opportunity gift bag to, because those who attend parties and host parties are by far your best prospects. They have basically qualified themselves.

You can make up the points as you go, depending on the group (you want to find a winner so you have to adapt to your audience). But here is a guide:

The guest with the most points wins. Be sure you have that guest’s information so you can follow up in a few days.

You Are What Your Repeatedly Do

First you make your habits, and then your habits make you.
You become a slave to your constantly repeated acts.
What at first you chose, at last compels.

Your thoughts lead you to a purpose.
Your purpose moves you to take action.
Your actions form your habits.
Your habits determine your character, and your character fixes your destiny.

Your habits are either the best of servants or the worst of masters.

Once in motion, a pattern tends to stay in motion.

WAHM Tip of the Week

Establish consistent office hours. This might be difficult in the beginning. Its tough for family to understand that just because you are at home you are still working. Your office hours should be the same time every day. Even when you feel ill you still need to be at work. If you must, create a sign that clearly indicates you are in fact working and even post your office hours.

Pass or Play

This is a great way to get those parties. You have them thinking throughout the presentation so bring them to their decision now.

"Ladies, check out these beautiful coin purses/goodie bags/mini totes I have. What I need you to do is pass this box/bag around and quickly choose a coin purse. Hold onto it but DO NOT open it yet."

"Ladies, the last thing we are going to do is play a real quick game called Pass or Play. I am simply going to ask each of you if you want to play or pass. If you would like to pass, simply put your coin purse/goodie bag/mini tote back in my box/bag and you are all done. If you would like to play, then you get to open the coin purse/goodie bag/mini tote and see what is inside for you. I'll make this real simple for you…I'll tell you what is inside…It says you have won a Featured Product! I'll even tell you what you will win. If you decide to play, you may win our top selling {Featured Product #1} (hold piece up), our adorable {Featured Product #2} or the customer favorite {Featured Product #3}! Now it really doesn't matter which one you win because when I come to your house to do your own personal show…you are going to get all this free and ½ price product (that you outlined in the hostess plan)."

Pause…"Now did everyone get that? If you decide to play then I get to come to your house and show your friends and family the products I've shown here tonight."

"When I met {Hostess} at {Previous Hostess} show, she decided to play and that's why we are here today/tonight. When she opened her coin purse/goodie bag/mini tote, she won the beautiful {Featured Product #1}". This can be yours next time.

Next, go around the room asking each guest if they would like to play. Ask and respond with a smile, "Thank You {their name}" whether they play or not. Always use their names. Start with someone that you already know is going to have a show or is really excited about the product. Never respond when they come up with an objection like I don't know many people, or my house is too small. Let the other guests talk her into it, not you! You simply keep smiling and wait for her decision. This shows that you are not going to pressure them.

All Personal Growth Involves Change

Personal growth is the process of responding positively to change. It involves risk as you step from the known to the unknown.

All your growth will depend on your activity.
Your strength and growth will come only through continuous effort and struggle. There will be no development without effort.

Trouble is the common denominator of living.
It is the great equalizer of life.
Your trials, your sorrows and your grief's will develop you.

When good or bad fortune comes your way, you must give it meaning and transform it into something of value.

What happens to you is not as important as your reaction to what is happening.

Getting Started as a Consultant

So you've decided to start working from home. You are pumped! You are excited! You are maybe a bit overwhelmed and even a bit lost as to where to begin.

Before you are off and running lets run down a few things first.

At this point you should have an idea of what you want to do and likely have found a company to join. If you have not I want you to think about this -how many do you know that sell the same product in your area or your networking circle online? If you do not know, start looking and asking. This will give you an idea of what your competition is. You need to know this from the start. If you know 20 people who sell the same thing, you will have a tough time building a business.

Next see how many would actually be interested in the product you offer. As an example lets say you sell southwest home furnishings. Do you live in a place where this would sell? Being unique does not always mean a good thing. You need to be able to sell it. Just because you feel it is great doesn't mean everyone else will. Do your local research as well.

Are you willing to invest in your business? Many don't realize you will have to invest. This includes advertising, business materials such as business cards and catalogs, demo product, samples. If you aren't willing to invest, this is not the right time to start a business. Create a budget of what you can spend now and sustain over the next 6-12 months. You want to look at up to 12 months because in some cases this is how long it can take for you to turn a profit and not returning it all back into your business.

What are you willing and not willing to do to make your business a go. If you are looking at a party plan but not willing to do parties, this is not the right type of business. Knowing what you are will and not willing to do will help determine a business that is right for you.

Doing a little homework will be very helpful when starting out. You will be more prepared in the long run and better able to take on the challenges you will face.

Door Prize Drawing

Before a party ends, you want to have everyone's information before they leave. A great way to do so is with Door Prize Slips. After you have collected everyones slip, put them in a box or even a tote bag. Pass this around and make it fun. Start passing this around when guests begin to arrive. As someone says the selected word for the day (purse, handbag, etc), someone passes them the box.

End your show with "Now who has my prize box?" (you started passing this around as guests arrive) This is a box that I have asked the ladies to pass around whenever they hear the word Purse or Handbag. Or you can say, "Okay, now time for a drawing! Has everyone filled out their guest survey sheets?" This gets you past that rare but awkward moment when nobody plays the pass or play game. Draw a name and give a prize!

Right Click Blockers - A Few Reasons They Make It Tough for Customers

As a graphic artist, I understand the reasoning behind right-click blockers, but as a customer/visitor who has often been frustrated by these when trying to navigate a site, I'd like to share a few reasons NOT to use them.

1. They keep customers from opening up parts of your page in other tabs--which is really useful when you are deciding what items you want to buy. Blocking this feature also forces people to leave your site to visit links you have, rather than just opening these in another tab or browser window.

2. If you advertise on traffic exchanges, the blockers keeps exchange surfers from breaking out of the traffic exchange frames so they can bookmark your site. A site on an exchange I was recently surfing lost me as customer for this reason.

3. If you have an "E-mail Me" link that does not include the actual text of your e-mail, than people with web based e-mail accounts like hotmail or gmail or yahoo can not e-mail you because they can not right-click to copy your e-mail address. An easy fix is to type out your e-mail: Put janedoe@email.com in stead of "e-mail me" so that customers can copy/paste it.

4. If your right-click blocker has a pop-up with a message like "Don't steal my images!" than you offend customers who were merely using right-click for the legitimate reasons listed above and have no intention of stealing your images.

5. Right click only protects your images from people who don't know how get them another way. Anyone can use print screen and a simple graphics program to crop them out of the image, and there are several other ways to get around this. So it's not even an effective protection for your images!

So, my advice? Put a copyright statement on your page, and leave the right-click blocker off. But if you feel like you have to have one, than at least spell out your e-mail so customers can contact you, have a "bookmark this site" link on your page if you use traffic exchanges to advertise, and make sure your pop-up messages are polite.

Floor Game

Give each guest three pieces of paper and ask them to put their name on each piece. Collect all papers and put them in a bag or bowl. On the floor, place three or four small prizes. These can be wrapped, placed in gift bags, or wide open. Use products from your business inventory to get guests excited about winning a product. Start calling names from the bowl. When each name is called the guests have to pick something from the floor. When the items are gone off the floor, they have to take from each other when their name is called. When all the names have been called three times, the guests left holding a prize wins.

Have cash and carry inventory ready for the party and take orders. With the holidays fast approaching this is a great way to assist customers with easy, fun, shopping.

Are you asking me or telling me?

A big problem with newcomers to marketing is knowing how bring traffic to websites. Part of that is the language used to entice people to visit. Are you asking me or telling me?

When you ask someone to visit your site you are just letting them know it is available. 99% of the time they won't. The other 1% will because they are curious or being courteous. Doesn't look for sales does it?

Internet marketing is tricky. Everything is written so it is hard to convey your feelings through the written word. Asking someone if they want to look at your site makes you sound unsure, unexcited, inexperienced. This is exactly what you do not want to portray.

Internet marketing and sales is addressing an issue and solving it. You need to tell those potential customers you have exactly what they are looking for. Don't ask them if what you have will work. You are the expert in this area.

Assume your potential customer wants your business card, catalog, flyer, samples. If they truly do not want what you have to offer they will decline giving you an opportunity t overcome the objection professionally and without pressure. Online you do the same. Automatically ask for an email address so you can email them a digital catalog, flyer, brochure. Along with these offer a coupon.

DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT add your potentials to your address book without their permission. There is nothing more damaging than spamming a potential customer right off the bat. You might as well check that person off your list if you engage in this behavior. There are better ways to get potential and current customers on mailing lists which we will discuss at a later time.

So next time you advertise or talk with a potential customer, don't ask them. Tell them. You will have far more accept than if you ask.

Successful Action is Cumalitive in Results

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.
Many people take the first step and then stop.
Yet, with every additional step you take, you enhance immensely
the value of your first step.

All masters of success are chiefly distinguished
by their power of adding a second, a third,
and perhaps a forth step in a continuous line.

There is no royal road to anything.
One thing at a time, all things in succession is the rule of life.
That which grows fast, withers as rapidly.
That which grows slowly, endures.

Do not despise the bottom rings in your ascent to greatness.

It's Your Game

In business you either follow the rules or write the rules. So it begs to ask the question - who's game is it?

This is your business. Your game. You are the boss. You are in control. There is nobody to answer to.

This is hard for some as we have been trained to take orders and do as we are told. There was always someone else to handle the problem. Now it is all on you.

You may think this does not apply to you as a consultant but you are wrong. The company you represent provides the product, materials, training, but you market and make the money. That makes it your business. You control how much or how little you earn.

Take control. Use the tools provide and go beyond. Think outside the box. Stand out and own your future.

WAHM Tip of the Week

Next time you pack a shipment, use real air popped popcorn. Not only is it easy on the wallet, it is safe for the environment including animals. You don't have to store this. You pop what you need when you need it. Do not use salt or oil on your popcorn as this can damage products. Popcorn is extremely light weight so your shipments will not be weighted down with heavy packing materials. Best of all if you have a little left over, you can sit back and relax with a popcorn snack.

Send it Out

Outsourcing is becoming widely popular especially in the WAHM world. Outsourcing can be email marketing, taking customer calls, invoices, web design and maintenance, maid service, grocery shopping.

Outsourcing is a general term for contracting another to take on a necessary task you are unable to complete. This can be anything so don't limit your thinking to work related only.

When considering outsourcing a task, think about is it worth doing yourself or hiring someone. A good way to look at this is figure out what your time is worth. Lets use for example you are worth $25 an hour based on your current income. If it takes you 3 hours to complete a new flyer at your rate of $75 but another only charges $30 to complete this task, this is worth the cost to outsource. You can then work on other tasks.

At the same time if you don't know how to do something such as graphic design, it is best to outsource and get a professional to do the work. Cheap is never professional. Don't pretend it is.

As a WAHM you may want to consider a personal assistant. This sounds glamorous but it is more affordable than you think. I can hire in a personal assistant for $10 an hour 10-20 hours a week. This assistant can take care of my errands such as dropping off bills, packages at the post office, picking up my prescriptions, throw in a load of laundry, answer phone calls. Maybe that assistant can take my young ones to the park and act as a part-time nanny. How much work can you accomplish with a short period of being kid free? This frees up my time to focus solely on business. The more time I have for business, the more time I have to make money.

Not ready to step into the personal assistant world? Consider a VA or Virtual Assistant. This is fast becoming another WAHM business. Other WAHMs are willing to take on those pesky admin duties you push to the side and get them down in a timely manner. Turn those time consuming tasks over to a VA and you focus on making money.

Before you say no, crunch those numbers and see where you can outsource saving time and money.

Aim At Your Target

You are excited to start your new business and tell everyone about it. You pour all your energy into doing this because after all once everyone hears about it they will want to buy. So why aren't you making the money you expect?

Assuming everyone will buy or having no idea who will by and defaulting marketing to all is a big reason why you will fail. Understand that only a small number of people will actually purchase your product or use your service.

You must determine what or who your target market is. Ask yourself "Who will buy your product or service"? Now before you answer this is specific, not general. Lets say you sell all natural makeup. Now just because you sell makeup does not mean all women will be interested. Fact is some have absolutely no interest that it is all natural. So who do you know that does? This does not mean you won't reach a broad demographic over time. You just have to narrow your target.

Knowing your target and zeroing in on this specific group gives you a niche. You are now an expert/specialist. This will allow for narrowing it down even further. Why would someone want to purchase your product or service?

People purchase products and/or services for 3 reasons -solves a problem, satisfies a need, just to make them feel good. Take a moment and determine which of these does your product or service provide first. Your product or service may serve more than 1; even all 3.

Now turn your focus to the demographics. Break this down to target age, gender, lifestyle, social class, beliefs. You can break this down even further. Before you resist, WAHM has work in the title. This does not just happen. If you want success you must do your research.

Now that you have the demographics portion down, how will you market to your target? Internet, newspaper, parties, word of mouth, fundraisers, etc. Now match that to your target market. Count the people you have come in contact within the last month. And yes I mean literally count as in 1, 2, 3. Out of the people you know, and you should (this is called networking), how many are in your target market?

You have the numbers so now figure out how often will they need to buy? Once a year? Once a month? Can you sustain and build a business off this information? If not, you will need to start over in your business plan but you will have the information for a better start.

A little homework goes a long way. Don't be afraid of it. This research will give you a realistic view of your business future. Just because you love the product or service does not mean everyone will. Its better to find out before you invest a large amount of money into a failing venture.

Dreams are Free

The beginning of your success lies in your imagination.
Visualize all of the things that you want in your life.
Make your mental blueprint and then begin construction.

You can make your dreams work and produce for you.
Make every thought, every fact, that comes into your mind
pay you a dividend.

Your imagination will show you how to turn possibility into reality.
The will to succeed springs from the knowledge that you can succeed.

Think of things not as they are, but as they might be.
Don't merely dream, create.

Do this, and you can live your dreams.

WAHM Tip of the Week

Have old forms, papers printed incorrectly? Cut these into smaller sections. Cut in half then in half again. Stack several together. Staple at the top or punch a hole in each corner at the top. Connect these together for a new notepad.

Take those stapled note pads and wrap a printed label that fits the width of your new notepad with your business info and give to customers. This is a great way to recycle and show your customers you care.

Quotas, quotas, quotas

As a WAHM it is likely you have joined as a consultant with a company that requires a quota. Some understand and fully comply while others challenge this. For this discussion we will focus on the consultant. We will talk later about the difference between a consultant, affiliate, etc.

Lets get an understanding of quotas. Quotas are set for many reasons. One the company must make money to cover expenses. If you are not selling, they are not making money, that can lead to a company's demise and you with a failed business. Another reason is if you don't have a goal, what motivates you to build a business? It is easy for you to walk away and do nothing. What is the point of joining a business to do nothing with it? As a consultant you must build a business.

Before joining any company get the details. Know what the quotas are, when are they due, and decide can you live with this. If you cannot, don't join. Don't join in case you can meet the quota. It is a waste of your time and the company's time to train you.

Once you have decided to join and meet the required quota, create a plan of action. Do not wait until the last minute and enter a desperate panic. Your plan of action should include parties, fairs and expos ad campaigns, phone calls. Know how you will sell, where, and when. Put your plan of action into effect immediately. Panic time does not produce the sales you would have made had you started right away and stayed consistent.

If you are in panic time, stop and breathe. Panic will not get your sales so take a moment to regroup. Brainstorm on how you can get those sales in. Book an online party, have a last minute catalog party, offer a spree. If you are too late you may have to accept you will need to make up the difference or the entire quota.

A WAHM business, even part-time, does not mean work when you feel like it. You still have to work. Put in the hours on a weekly basis. Create a schedule and stick to it. If you worked outside the home you would need to work to get paid, correct? A WAHM business is no different. If you do the real work, you will get the sales. Telling people about your website and waiting for the sales to come in is simply not enough. That takes maybe an hour a week. Sorry to break it to you, that is not work.

Most quotas are quarterly while others may be monthly. Break that quota down into 3 parts for quarterly or 4 parts for monthly. Smaller goals are easier to manage and feel more attainable.

Create a list of items or group of items that will help you meet your quota. This can be the full quota or the broken down manageable goals. Create your marketing plan around promoting these items during your quota period. Change it often and keep things fresh.

Before a quota period begins, create a list of needed items. If you need to fulfill your quota personally you have a list of items needed for business to help you along. This will keep you from scrambling later. You have to invest in your business so this is one of the times to take advantage of adding to your investment.

Don't look at a quota as a disappointing event. This is what makes your business. The goal of a business is to make money and meeting a quota is money in your pocket. Imagine what you can do with the money you earned just from making the minimum quota.

A trick that I often recommend and have used in the past is take the quota and triple it. I see that as my quota fulfillment. If I only make half I still meet my quota. If I make the entire goal, that is three times what I would have made had I stuck to the required quota.

If you are with a company that requires a purchase of any size to stay active, turn that into a number. How much are you wanting to make? $10? $25? $100? How much will you need to sell to make that? Use that as your quota number.

Quotas are a business goal; not a death sentence. These are necessary to ensure business continues and thrives for all involved including customers. This is a positive action so keep this in the back of your mind.

World Alzheimer's Day, September 21, is a day when the Alzheimer's Association and other organizations around the globe unite our efforts to raise awareness about the disease and its impact on our families, communities and nations. We're closer than ever to research breakthroughs that have the potential to change the course of this disease. Now is the time for you to take action and join us. Let's win this fight!

WAHM Tip Of The Week

Get a magnet in the mail that you don't intend to use? Have one that is fade? Recycle it and glue a favorite picture of your children on the front.

Cut those old business card magnets into squares and glue on old buttons, lone decorative rocks, scrap of old material, rhinestones or even silk flowers.

You can even recycle by gluing on your own business card and sharing with a friend.

Offer these tips to your customers as part of your relationship building. They will thank you for it.

Here We Go Again!

I have touched on this subject in the past and we must revisit from time to time. This is in regards to importing address books into subscriptions.

For some strange reason people believe it is OK to add their email address books to their business emails without permission. No matter how you justify it this is spam. It was not requested and therefore is a big no no.

The argument comes up well they can just unsubscribe if they do not wish to receive it. Yes they can and most do but they should not have to is the point.

This practice does more than just become a temporary inconvenience. It can damage your reputation. Most times instead of gaining a customer, you lose one plus whomever they tell about your spamming practices.

Next time you consider importing your email address book to business newsletters, social networks, or anything else you were not given permission to do, think about the damage that can and will be created in regards to your business.

Is it really worth it in the end?

You Must Act On Your Dreams

You have to make your own opportunities.
Your future is not a matter of chance.
It's a matter of your choice.
It's not something you wait for.
It's something you must actively pursue.

Don't wait for extraordinary opportunities.
Seize common occasions and make them great.
Opportunity can come disguised in the form of misfortune, or temporary defeat.

Start today, right where you are.
Distant fields will always appear greener.
Yet, golden opportunities are all around you.

You can live a great dream if you pursue it.

On A Mission

In every business including WAH businesses you are on a mission. A mission to build a successful business and support your family. Every business should have a mission and you are going to write a mission statement. Yes, even a WAHM, consultant, affiliate, distributor, crafter, or any other title you wish to give yourself.

A mission statement can be either complex or simple. This may be a statement others will never see. No matter what you need to create one.

Your mission statement is your vision for your business. Your goals. Your values.

Look at the larger companies and read their mission statement.

Here are a few of my favorite companies and their mission statements:

Starbucks
To inspire and nurture the human spirit— one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time.

Walmart
What is Wal-Mart's mission statement?
Wal-Mart’s mission is to help people save money so they can live better.

McDonalds
What is McDonald's Mission Statement?

McDonald's brand mission is to "be our customers' favorite place and way to eat." Our worldwide operations have been aligned around a global strategy called the Plan to Win centering on the five basics of an exceptional customer experience – People, Products, Place, Price and Promotion. We are committed to improving our operations and enhancing our customers' experience.

Don't over think it. Start writing and it will come.

From time to time refer back to your mission statement. Use your mission statement to keep you on track. Update if needed.

Have a mission statement you wish to share? Lets see it!
