Setting the deadline

Many WAHMs are using a Party Plan. One of the challenges is when to close a party and other deadlines. So often you are either told or tempted to keep a party open for a certain amount of time. Most times this turns into more of a hassle than it is beneficial to you and your hostess.

Here are a few tips in creating that deadline:

Be clear about your expectations of her party. Make sure she understands her party will close the night of the party. Holding it open in most cases does not allow for more orders. It just lengthens the time her guests can receive their items.

Be sure to include plenty of order forms and catalogs in your hostess packet. Your hostess is most excited and motivated prior to the party. Providing her with these gives her an opportunity to start off your party.

Offer an incentive to have orders prior to her party. Offer double hostess credits for any outside orders or offer a specific product if she has a certain amount in outside orders prior to the party. I like to use a hostess tic tac toe. It makes it fun and gives a few options for the hostess to earn extra goodies.

Coach your hostess. During the first meeting be excited. Provide her with everything she needs to start her party right. Give her a deadline to getting that guest list to you. If you send out the invites you are making it easy for her to enjoy her time and less chance of forgetting that party. Meet or call your hostess weekly leading up to the party. By staying in contact you can be sure she has all she needs and address her questions. You also keep the party on track and all deadlines on target.

During the party be clear the party will close that night. Some are afraid to say they have no money or not interested in buying and often ask if they can place an order in a couple days. Explain that for their friend to receive credit they will need to place their order that evening but offer a party date to them which will benefit their friend.

When booking other parties to benefit the hostess, place a deadline on when these need to take place. I personally like to use a 60 day window. Many times I use this because you will be inviting some of the same people and do not want to overload them on the products. I don't know how many times I have been invited to the same party every 2 weeks until the cycle was broken. When you overwhelm guests the bookings stop and so do the sales. If you are on constant contact, receive their guest list in a timely manner, and begin to take outside orders, the success of the party is greater.

When you have a hostess who is insisting on holding a party open beyond the party date kindly explain you are penalizing the guests who did attend and could cause them to not receive their order as promised. Offer a secondary catalog party if your hostess is adamant about holding that party open. This allows you to process orders for guests getting them their orders in a timely manner, pleasing your hostess in her hopes of getting more orders, and allows you the chance to increase sales.

Catalog parties need deadlines and be strict. Open a window of no more than 14 days for a catalog party to be open. I personally use a 7 day window. This is plenty of time for your hostess to share the catalogs and pick up orders. Beyond that it is easy to lose orders, lose checks, or those wanting to order brush it off ending in no orders.

Deadlines are not just for your hostess. They are for you as well. Create and stick to deadlines when meeting with a hostess for her hostess packet or to collect outside orders. Sticking to your own rules sets the tone for the entire process. Stick to the rules with family and friends. It is so easy to be relaxed with the rules for family and friends because you want to give them extra just because of who they are. Don't fall for the relaxed attitude. This is still a business and personal business should not be compromised. Give everyone the same deals across the board and you will never have an issue.

Get Dressed Every Day

Working from home in your pajamas all day sounds like a dream job right? Of course it does! But did you know your appearance can effect your attitude?

When you are dressed lazy, you feel lazy, and this can translate into your attitude while you work. You will be less productive.

Getting dressed every day for work will put you in the mindset for work regardless if anyone will actually see you. Being dressed for work changes your attitude and you are ready to work. You are more productive and even have a professional tone in your voice when dealing with client calls.

Getting dressed for work is fixing your hair, put a little make up on, appropriate shirt (no t-shirt unless it is a logo shirt), pants, and proper shoes. You may say to yourself this is a lot of work just to stay home and work. This is your job we are talking about. If you went to an actual office you would get dressed correct? What makes your home office any different?

It all goes back to if you look good you feel good. If you look professional you feel professional. Try it for an entire week and you will notice a difference.

Creating Fillers

A filler for business is marketing materials sent to others and usually grouped together in packs. This is a great networking and marketing tool. These are great to hand out at vendor fairs with just your information.

A good filler has a business card, brochure or catalog, and a sample or promotional item. These should be neatly put together or attached.

Above you see a few ideas for fillers sent in to me recently to be placed inside a tote that will be given out during my local Relay for Life event on June 10, 2011. Some are simple while others are more elaborate.

You can join groups such as mompack.com and start your own filler packs. Include them in orders, hand out during customer or hostess meetings, pass out at fairs, or anytime you come across a potential customer. They are fun to receive as a little gift and makes you memorable. Of course when passing out filler packs be sure your own information is included. I like to add my business card to the outside of the pack I give out.

I use 6"x9" sealed cellophane envelopes. All fillers I collect must fit within this. I do not collect fillers for the same business or similar business I am in. I also am careful not to place competing reps within the same pack as well. I take in several at once so I can organize them easily and not overlap. I take 1 day a month to create my fillers. Because of this I only collect enough to give out in 1 month. One so I don't have tons and tons of fillers and two I don't have fillers for longer than I need that may have promotions and coupons that will expire before I can pass these out. At this time I only give out about 25 a month. Soon I will be doubling this so I will take more than this in the next few months. Some do not do this and that is ok. Everyone creates theirs how they choose. This is just how I create mine.

Filler packs are a lot of fun to assemble and pass out. They have brought me much success and are very appreciated by those receiving them.

Don't cheat your business

You are a crafter and everyone says wow you should sell your work and you think yeah I will sell online. There are plenty of free things I can use. This won't cost a dime!

Not the case. A business takes money regardless of your budget. Don't cheat your business before it even starts.

First thing is first. Get that business name. Keep it short, sweet, and to the point. Keep it relevant to your business. You don't want to use sweet treats when your business is graphic design. You also don't want to use what everyone else is using. Boutique, bowtique, one stop shop, are all common. Using your name or your child's name is over done. Unique spelling look fun but if nobody call spell it, how will they find you? So don't use thins like "Oliviaz Designz". And no long names. They are hard to remember. "Olivia's Jewelry Accessories and Custom Designs" sounds great but will those who don't know you remember this? Even the ones that do know you, will they remember it all when telling friends?

Once you choose your name Google it. It's an easy way to see if someone is using it. Nobody using it? Now head over to godaddy.com and check the domain name. If available, buy it. Don't use the excuse I don't have the money. You don't secure it now, someone can come in and taken from under your nose.

Now go get an email account with your business name. I like gmail because this is Google based and Google based is great for online exposure. This account should be used for business only.

Now go through a few social networks and secure your name such as Twitter and Facebook. These are highly recognizable and anything recognizable is great for your online exposure. Plus you want people to search for you even if you are not an online business yet.

Now this is the part people ignore and skip. Doesn't matter how small you are or if you only sell on places like eBay or etsy, you must register your business and get a business license and resellers license or tax id. Check with your county clerk or state to see what you need as state to state and county to county can vary. If you get caught running a business in your state without these, you will get fined and charged with tax evasion. It's not pretty so don't go there.

You've jump the hoops and survived the ring of fire so take a deep breath and get that website. It sounds intimidating but really it is not. You can start small with places such as wahmshoppes.com and move up as you need. Stay away from free sites. Not only are they limited but getting in the search engines are a pain, you cheapen your business because visitors wonder why you can't afford proper hosting, and you do not appear to be reputable because its a red flag for fly by night scams. You came this far so don't cheat your business.

Don't overlook the exposure and opportunities you have with blogging. Some think that they don't see a benefit to a blog for their business or that it is a right fit for them. Blogs give you the opportunity to go in depth on your products in a way that a website or social networks do not offer. Social networks are for relationship building, websites are for sales, blogs are for information.

You have the product, the name, the website. How does anyone know you exist? Design and order those business cards. Pass them out. Give family and friends a stack to pass out for you. Use those business cards every way possible. Marketing is key to your business. Free ads sound good and just posting a link here and there is easy but if nobody knows you are online nobody will even look.

Now that you have a few things to get you started with building your business, go out there and get that exposure.

Know the facts

Recently I have seen a lot of talk about conducting business on facebook including discussion about promotion guideline changes. It is great to see so many coming together to brainstorm for viable options and clarify the facts. What is not great is the misinformation and blatant misdirection.

Everyone is always trying to come up with the best ways to promote and conduct business within social networks (not just Facebook). This can be tricky as there are rules and guidelines that must be followed as written. Not as they are interpreted. DO NOT rely on what others tell you and be sure you are reading the TOS of any site you are using to be clear of what is allowed using their site. Reading the TOS can be long and sometimes confusing but read it for yourself. Just because someone else tells you it is ok does not make it ok. Ultimately you are responsible regardless if everyone else is doing it. Ignoring facts do not make them go away.

I have seen a few deliberately ignore the information offered and choosing to continue knowing they are in violation. There are a few who have told their fans to just change their giveaways to product testers and it will exclude them from the rules. A promotion is a promotion no matter what name you give it. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, you can call it a cow but it doesn't make it less of a duck.

You can follow the rules or not follow the rules regardless of the situation or place. Even if someone else is not caught it does not mean you won't be caught. Are you willing to lose everything you have gained over a mistake you chose not to investigate the facts about prior?

Mobile Office

If you meet a potential customer or recruit away from home, are you prepared to service their needs? When you are out and about you want to be prepared for anything. Just because you are off running an errand doesn't mean you are off "the clock." You want to create a mobile office.

Your mobile office can be a simple file box with separate file sections for catalogs, hostess packets, recruiting packets, business cards, brochures (sales and recruiting), order forms, calculator for on the spot orders, and pens. I use a really nice accordion file at the moment. Everything is organized and neat. You can even use those nice colored milk crates with hanging file folders.

You may even want to consider a mini demonstration kit so you have a few of your most popular products available to show. Samples are other items you may want in your mobile office.

Keep your mobile office in your car (or any car you are driving at the time) so you are always prepared when you come across a potential customer or potential recruit.

A couple things to remember:

Check and restock your mobile office weekly or as needed. This way you always know you are never out of anything and avoid that moment of saying "I am all out"
Keep that car clean. You do not want to have your potential customer or potential recruit looking over your messy car. Even when you are making house calls, this is an extension of your home office. Keep it clean and professional.
You may want to also consider a car freshener. Most don't think about this because we are used to how our car smells but it may have an odor. Having an air freshener helps with this. Don't go overboard. Just something simple and light such as vanilla and lavender work well.
Do not smoke in your car. Regardless if your mobile office is in the trunk or backseat, smoke does linger and will get into your mobile office. Many people are allergic to the smoke while others are simply turned off. You do not want your personal habit to get in the way of your business.
If you sometimes travel with your pets, it may be best to keep your mobile office in the trunk. This area is less likely to come in contact with pet hair and dander that some people are allergic to.

Knock Offs, Replicas, Mirror Image

Knock offs, replicas, mirror image are common terms used for illegal copies of products such as designer purses, designer glasses, or other copyright/trademarked goods. But are these ok?

It is illegal no matter how you try to reword or excuse it. If it has the designer name and is an exact replica of the real deal, it is illegal. You cannot sell these. It does not matter whether you state these are fake. If it looks like the real deal, it is illegal and you can be prosecuted to the extent of that law.

Knock-off handbags are also known as counterfeit purses and they are made to look like an original designer version and are meant to fool others into thinking they are the "real thing." Knock-offs are big business. There is lots of money to be made in selling knock-off versions of the best designer handbags, but at what cost?

You can sell inspired styles meaning they are not replicas or attempted to be sold as the real deal. Handbags and sunglasses that say they are "designer inspired" don't have a fake designer label on them. They are purses that look similar to the latest styles and in fact are inspired by the latest designer purses but have their own unique characteristics.

Even if not sold as the real deal you still need to be careful. You may have seen a story at one point in time where target was sued for a purse design they sold was too close to the original design and it infringed on their trademark and/or copyright.

I bring this up because I am seeing more and more online stores opening with these illegal knocks offs and many do not realize it is illegal. They see others doing it and figure hey it must be ok. Its not. You can research this online, call your local small business administration, business lawyer, the US patent office.

Trademarks and Copyrights are put in place to protect the original design. Would you want someone to steal your idea and sell a copy of it as their own?

DO NOT get in the middle of knock off purses and the legalities of this. You can be buried in legal fees, fines, your reputation, lose your freedom.

No matter what business you begin always do your research. There is no excuse for not knowing something. It is your responsibility to know your business and how it works. A little homework can go a long way in your success.

Everyone Else Is Doing It

It is so easy to use what others are doing when it comes to your business especially when you see their success. In most cases there is absolutely nothing wrong with this. Follow their lead and add your own spin to this making it your own.

If everyone does the same thing there is nothing that stands out about you. That is where the problem with this method comes in. You sell candles out of a box as your gimmick and you are good at it, several will come along and do that same thing. And the reason why people do that? "Everyone else is doing it."

There are a few times you do not what to use the "Everyone else is doing it" line. This includes illegal activity. Now you think deceit, theft, fraud, or as I call it - lying, taking, faking, or anything else. Did you know there is more out there that some justify and is accepted as being ok?

Now I love my Disney items and I love crafting Disney inspired items for personal use. Now lets say you take Mickey Mouse and put his face on a t-shirt and sold these. If you did not get licensing from Disney to sell these Disney items you are infringing on copyright and trademarks owned by Disney. Now Disney items are not the only items in which this is occurring and only using it as an example of things I do see out there. In fact I seen a so-called reputable boutique selling outifts handmade using copyright and trademark images for resale without permission. They even complained their account on a website dedicated to crafters was closed because the lawyers of this company went to the owners of the crafting site and demanded all copyright infringed items be removed immediately. The comment came up that "everyone else is doing it" and that company is just greedy by going after the small people. Well as an artist if you create an image and hold the copyrights to it, you have to go after anyone, big and small, who is using the image unlawfully to hold any ground in court. And you know what? They are still selling these outfits even knowing these lawyers and putting a stop it it.

Now just because "everyone else is doing it" doesn't mean it is not illegal and cannot get you in hot water. Would you want someone to take your copyrighted image or trademark design and pass it off as theirs? How about that hair bow design you worked so hard to come up with and someone steals your idea?

Now the time you want to say "everyone else is doing it" is being successful. Do what you love and work it as a business. Don't just put a link out there because "everyone else is doing it." Make your mark and stand out.

How to Prevent Cyberbullying | eHow.com

This is a serious issue especially our younger generation. This is not a typical topic for this blog but I feel it is important. Together we can combat and overcome such a hateful situation.

Even in the WAHM community I have seen this become an issue that has been ugly and devastating. You get some cliques that become relentless in their attacks trying to help "their" friend. In all actuality this is cyberbullying. No one should have to suffer or tolerate such actions.

Children are not the only victims. So are adults so don't allow this to happen to you or anyone you know.

Get in the Habit

Getting those business cards can be difficult to get out there. You can never remember when is it ok to hand them out, who to hand them out to, when it is not appropriate.

Here are my tips:

Whenever someone asks for your phone number regardless of what it is, hand them a business card. I just hand them one and tell them its easy to to give you this and it has my email in case you ever need it.

When someone asks about my business I hand them one and tell them call me sometime and lets have a drink. It keeps it casual and keeps the gate open to a new customer.

I never leave them in areas that are iffy such as bathroom stalls. Some will tell you this is ok but I do not. Most times stores have policies against this and can just get you into hot water. Plus when the maintenence people come for a cleaning your cards go down the drain and possibly without one ever being seen.

I have a business card case which I have attached a magnetic version to the outside. When I am out having a drink with the girls or out to dinner I place this on the table. Most times the server will ask about it and I will give them a card. I don't leave a card because for me most times these just get throw away and never where I intended it to go.

When at the nail salon they have cards from others available. I will ask if I can leave some with them.

I trade business cards with my hair dresser. When someone needs a new stylist I had them a card. When he has a bride to be come in or hears of someone going to a bridal shower he passes on my card.

When I pass out cards I want to keep the ratio high when it comes to going into the hands of someone who will use it. I know not everyone will use them but I want this to be effective marketing.

WAHM or SAHM? What is the difference?

Over the years you have seen these terms and they are interchangeable depending on the situation. Before we discuss these, lets define them.

WAHM - Work At Home Mother/Mom... This means you have some sort of business that you work from home. This may be crafts, direct sales, or a business you started. This can mean you have children at home while you work or they may be at school while you work. Either way if you generate income from home you are a WAHM

SAHM - Stay At Home Mother/Mom... This means you stay home with the children and your only job is raising your children. You do not generate an income from home. You may have children at home all day or at school part of the day. If you generate no income from the house and no outside work you are a SAHM

When asked whether you are a WAHM or a SAHM you are not both. I see many say oh I do both or I am a part-time WAHM and a full-time SAHM.

If you are a SAHM, embrace it. Enjoy it for all its worth. There is absolutely nothing wrong with staying home to raise the beautiful children you have.

If you are a WAHM, embrace it. There is nothing wrong with making an income by working from home and raising your children.

If you are a WAHM you need to have the mentality of this. If you do not see yourself as a WAHM or see yourself as a WAHM and a SAHM this can and does hinder your success. You need to see yourself as a working mom with a job.

In the past I have talked about schedules as a WAHM and why these are important. The use or lack of use is why you need these schedules. You need to work your business. Doesn't matter if you make money blogging, crafting, selling avon, transcribing, or do home parties. If you want to make money, start it with attitude. You will see the difference.

Look back to move forward

2011 is now here and a fresh start begins. It is time to look ahead and write down your business goals for the year.

Before we do that, lets take a look back at 2010.

What were your business goals?

Did you accomplish any of those goals? Partially or fully?

How did these goals affect your business?

What were your disappointments?

How did these affect your business?

These are just a few questions you should be asking yourself. You may ask more. This is not about reflecting on the past. This is about learning. To know how to move forward we need to know how we arrived at today.

Expand on the successes of last year. Go over the disappointments and learn how a different path would change the outcome. These should be reflected in your new goals for 2011.

We need to write down the goals for 2011. We need to start with the long term goal for 2011. Break that down to 6 month goals, 3 month goals, 1 month goals. The first step to your long term goal is what will you do this week that will lead you in the direction of accomplishing your 2011 goals.

These need to be challenging but attainable goals. Lets break it down in an example to see where we need to go.

Lets say your goal for 2011 is to be in the position to pay your entire mortgage through your business earnings. If your mortgage monthly is $1,000, what will you need to earn each month? If after all business expenses your take home is 20% of all sales you will need to sell $5,00 monthly by the end of the year.

Now remember the goal is not to begin earning this much in the first month. The goal is to lead up to this. Maybe you will find it best for you to start with $1,000 each month for the first 4 months. You have to decide what is best for you.

In your goals you need to list what you are and are not willing to do. We all have something we are not willing to do so be honest here. If are not willing to go door to door or hold home parties, you need to list why you are not willing. Again be honest here. If you are not honest with yourself, you will not accomplish anything. If you say you will not do home parties because you do not like people, how can you work around that? Don't just list what you will not do and not offer yourself options. You may find what you will not do is something you are willing to do just didn't have options to make it happen.

Employee or Owner?

Starting a business is exciting but the challenges start almost immediately. There are many challenges that you face when you want to start a business. Especially an online business. The biggest problem, in my opinion, is the mindset. Unfortunately, most people are coming from corporate America, either having just lost their job or not being able to find one, and think that running a home business is no different from working for a boss. This is where they get into trouble.

I think that most of us are doomed right from birth. We're brought up to believe that we need to go to school, get a good education and then go find some Fortune 500 company to go work for until we hit age 65 then retire. The reality is, with the way the world is today, you're lucky if you can hold on to a job for a year, let alone until age 65.

This kind of thinking is what stops home business owners from having the success that they want. One reason is because of the "work" mentality. In the brick and mortar world, you work a job, you get paid for the work you do. Every 2 weeks there is a paycheck waiting for you to bring to the bank. With your own home business, it doesn't quite work that way. It could be months before you start seeing any return at all. For the person with the "work" mentality, this is usually unacceptable and they end up quitting before they ever really get started.

Another problem with the work mentality is that the person only does what the boss tells them to do. There is usually no independent thought in the process. Well, with your own home business, it's almost all independent thought. YOU have to decide what product to sell. YOU have to decide how to advertise and how much money to spend. YOU have to decide when something isn't working and it's time to try something else. And YOU have to get your butt out of bed in the morning. Nobody is going to threaten to fire you should you decide you "don't want to work that day."

As you can see, the mindset that is needed in order to work your own home business is totally different from what you're used to in the "real" world.

So back to the question. Are you a business owner or an employee?

"Me" Time

You are up to your ears in laundry, taking care of the kids, keeping up with the vacuuming, the never ending dishes, making lunch for the next day, chauffeuring the kids from one game to another, and get work done. But when do you stop and take time for yourself?

As a WAHM you may think you have no time to do everything that needs to get done let alone something just for you. But you do need "me" time at some point.

You have a website and excited about the orders that will come pouring in. So why aren't they?

One problem I see over and over again in websites is the "cute" and "fun". Cute and fun do not spell a good business site. So what is cute and fun?

First hint:

You need graphics for your new site so you look for fun and exciting free graphics. You find a great picture of a glitter rose the same exact color of your site, you love roses, and even has the perfect wording you are wanting. You add it to your site because everyone will "get it". What they "get" is not professional. They see amature, no attention to details, free meaning cheap. Great image to portray to your new clients, right?

Second hint:

You hate the block of text so you decide to center your text. Makes the page interesting. You pat yourself on the back. Problem is what you see as centered can be off center on someone elses computer. How this is possible? Screen sizes vary and how they translate vary. Not so interesting anymore is it?

Third hint:

You want everyone to know exactly what you are selling and what you are all about. You spell everything out on the home page because of course this is the first thing everyone sees. You might even spell out how you came to become a WAHM and how you need this to take care of your family. Another WAHM will understand and of course they will buy. If they are all buying, then why aren't you selling? Customers don't read. They skim. They want to know what they want to know in a very short amount of time. I believe I read somewhere it is 7-10 seconds before a customer will decide to stay or go. If they have to read too much, they will leave and most likely never return again.

Anything sound like your site?

There is nothing wrong with bright colors and feeling good but keep it clean and simple. Avoid flashing graphics. Avoid glittering graphics. Avoid graphics with names or site they belong to or even redirect you to find the site the graphic was found. Graphics need to feel as though they belong. As if made just for your site and your business.

Avoid too many graphics especially those hosted on other sites. If at all possible avoid using graphics on other sites. Not everyone is working off high speed internet or the best quality computer. Because of this too many graphics and too many hosted elsewhere do not allow for your page to load quickly. If it does not load quickly customers will only click off your site looking for another site that will load quickly.

Another thing about graphics is avoid inappropriate graphics. You do not need half naked drawings with your name to sell a product.

Even those with passion type companies don't need these. I see plenty of women who do not use these graphics and are very tactful in their presentation to avoid offending anyone. Do not refer to certain body parts or acts even if they are in the site description. If a customer is interested in more information they will go to the site and view the detail.

Avoid excess banners on your site. If you have a site that is intended to be a 1 stop shop, add a few products. Talk about the products you offer. Organize in a clean and professional manner. Too many banners makes your site look like an ad site and not the professional shop you are looking for. The idea is to keep customers on your site not send them elsewhere. If they are constantly sent bouncing around it becomes inconvenient and diswades customers from buying. Don't let them get away.

Watch your wording. Lenghty novel looking pages only make the customer rethink about shopping. Customers want an easy and convenient shopping experience. If they have to work at it, they don't want to shop with you. At all costs avoid the sad story about losing your home, your husband leaving you, and your 5 kids are starving so you need to sell. Customers will only feel as though they are being pushed or even scammed into buying. This will not build the long lasting relationship you need.

It is said customers decide whether they will shop from your site within the 1st 7-10 seconds. Because this is so little you don't have time for heavy graphics to load or lenthy wording to read.

Online shopping is all about convenience. Make it convenient and easy to shop from your site.

Did you hear that?

We all heard it but did we really listen? What are we listening for? What our customer needs. So did you hear it?

At some point in time we all have to talk with a customer and satisfy a customer's needs. The problem is not everyone is listening. What we hear is a customer wants to buy so lets sell that customer something. What we should hear is what needs the product will satisfy.

If you want to close the sale quickly you will hear your customer say they want to buy body lotion. You may even offer an upsale. During the conversation you missed the part where the lotion is for her sensitive, dry face and the lotion she wants is not the right lotion. If you were listening you would suggest the correct lotion and explain why the suggestion would work better.

Even when a customer does not give up such good information freely, you can still get the info. Simply asking why they love a product will give you clues. If they don't have much money, give them the most bang for their buck. This doesn't mean go cheap. If they love your books for their 3 grandchildren show them sets with books for a lower price when divided vs buying just one at a time and spending more in the long run.

The point is get to know your customer and why they love the products you offer. Doing so will better serve your customer and create a life long customer.

There is no difference whether this lead is personal or professional. You don't want to send people searching. You want to give as much as you can. Give a lead in a manner you would wish to receive a lead. Not only did you help your professional but you helped your friend in the process.

Regardless of what is going on at the time you must always have a smile on your face. This gives you the appearance of being positive and friendly. People want to do business with those that are positive and friendly. When you are positive, your business grows in a positive way. When something goes wrong, find the positive. When you have a hard time being positive, just smile. You will notice a significant difference in how you speak, walk, think. So keep in mind that when you think positive you will be positive.

To move your business forward you need to accomplish a minimum of 1 task for your business each and every day.

In direct sales there is the 2x2 rule -

2 new contacts a day
2 parties a week
2 recruits a month

I understand that my 1 task a day and the 2x2 rule doesn't sit right but my point with it is you must must must do something for your business each and every single day regardless of what is going on.

Remember , your business is a numbers game. The more people who know about your business, the more business cards your pass out, the more parties you hold (online and offline), the more sales you will bring in.

If you have done nothing for your business today, you are not working your business.

Watching your bottom line

Every business does not end its expenses at start up. You will constantly need to reinvest. Reinvestment can be new products to demo, samples, business materials such as catalog and brochures, advertising, and so on. But how much do you make in the end? I can ask a successful person and they have the answer. One who is not so successful will tell you the initial commission. Why? Because a successful person is always watching the bottom line and where all monies are going.

Always know what is coming in and what is going out. If you don't know these basic figures, who do you know what your profit is? Your profit is not your commission percentage. It is what comes in at the end of the day after your business expenses.

Track your mileage, prize cost that you give away, cost of catalogs, pens, anything you pay for to run your business. This is how you will find what it costs you to run your business and give you the end percentage you earn from sales.

Track money coming in and out using excel, quickbooks, an old fashion ledger. There are several programs and resources to help you keep on top of your business and watch your bottom line

Taking care of your customers

So many are about the one and done sale and forget repeat business is vital to your success. So many times I have ordered from different reps from one company because once I ordered I never heard from them again. I also got empty promises and gave up.

When a customer first orders they are looking for a relationship. They are looking for someone to ask questions of, someone knowledgeable, someone who cares. Their first experience is a powerful experience. Make it count.

When you customer orders, send them a thank you note. This can be a simple email but a handwritten note is best. Check back with them when their order arrives. Ensure it is exactly what they wanted, if they have any questions, and even offer a little coupon for their next order. A couple weeks after receiving the order, follow up once again.

If you make an offer, follow through. Don't offer a special deal only to find it will break the bank and you have to take the offer back.

Keep track of what your customer orders. Most times they have a pattern that you can follow. You will learn how fast they need that new lipstick or when ready to buy more candles. You will also find their purchasing pattern reveals all their likes and dislikes. This will allow you to offer a new seasoning, new container, new hairbow.

Take the time to get to know your customer. Doing so on a personal level will give you insight on anniversaries, birthdays, condolences, times of congratulations. These may not be times to make a sale but it shows your customer the extra effort.

When a customer has a problem with an order, product, service, take the time to address the issue. Do not play the blame game. The moment do you, you have lost your customer's trust. Blaming others doesn't solve the problem.

Keep it simple and be smart about it. Your customer will love you for it as they will be a long time customer.

Make it your business

When you start a business or join a company, who does the work? So why aren't you making it your business?

When starting a business whether this is your product or you signed up to sell a product for another this is your business. Your work generates income so why aren't you making this your business? Every customer is yours. You provide the customer service, you sold them the product, you gained their trust.

It's time to grab the reigns and take charge. The company you signed up to represent and sell a product for has given you the tools to make this your business. But don't expect them to do the work for you. That is your job. The harder you work, the more money you will make, the larger your business will expand.

If you want the business you must go find it. Do not wait for it to come to you. Order those business cards, print those flyers, wear that logo wear.

Have a website? Give it out to everyone and you believe its only a matter of time before everyone sees how wonderful I think it is and start selling a ton right? Wrong! When showing off that website you are only making people aware of the site regardless of what is for sale. You still have to promote and sell the product. Network marketing can be lucrative but not many know how to make a go of it to make the dollars start rolling in. You have to order that product and get samples in the hands of your customers. Its the only way to get those customers to appreciate and purchase the product.

Start a blog. Take the time to educate your customer about a product. Don't focus on telling them why they should use it above others but tell them why it is useful to them. If it has more than one use they want to know this.

Start a mailing list. Either by email or postal. DO NOT add people without their permission. Its rude, tacky, and is considered spam which is illegal. Keep your customers up to date about periodic sales, specials, and events. Keep these bi-weekly for email and monthly for postal mail.

Stop sitting back and letting someone else run this for you. This is your business so own it.

Time Management

Time management and business go hand in hand. You need both to be successful.

Problem is most don't quite understand what this means. For some its doing tasks in a timely manner. For others it means watching their time. And for a few it just means sticking to a schedule. Now these are all valid. While they look the same, they are different.

Before you can effectively manage your time correctly you need to be aware of time. For this here is a simple exercise.

For 1 week keep track of individual tasks. Notate the start time and end time. When you change tasks end the time. Notate everything. No cheating now. Note everything from email writing sessions, phone calls, lunch break, even bathroom breaks. It can be a laborious task but you will find this extremely helpful. At the end of the week add together all your business time. Once this is done break it down to the individual tasks such as emails, phone calls, party time, prep time, etc. This will give you a sense of how much you not only spend your day but how long you spend on tasks and business as a whole.

The reason for the task is because often people see themselves as working all day when in reality they only worked a full 2 hours on business. Once you have a sense of how your day is spent, lump all the individual tasks into one. Now you can create a schedule of daily tasks in blocks of time. At first this can be difficult but you will soon find it can be easily accomplished. Use an egg timer to keep you on track. When time is up, time is up. Move on to the next task.

When creating your schedule you need to create breaks, lunch. Turn off the tv, This can be more distracting than anything else. Even more than children if that seems possible. If you are working with children at home, schedule around eating, naps, playtime.

If you conduct parties or workshops, set up and take down your display several times and time it. Get an idea of how long it takes. The bonus to this is you do get faster. Knowing this will help managing your time before, during, and after parties. Do this each time your display changes too. Rehearse your presentation. Knowing how long your presentation will help manage your party time. Even video taping yourself and seeing how you look and sound can be helpful. You may find you are repeating yourself unnecessarily or leaving out important information.

Keep notes around in regards to your product. Not only is this very helpful during parties but also on phone calls. Keeping frequently used information at your fingertips can be a big time saver. This prevents you from wasting time looking up frequently asked information.

Know your products and how to explain them. When first starting out you always have that learning curve but learn quickly the features and benefits of a product. You don't have to explain it in its entirety. An example is if you are selling moisturizing lipstick. A feature is the moisturizing and the benefit is the prevention of cracked lips. You don't need to go over how it moisturizes, every color it comes in, or why it is better. Find up to 3 features and matching benefits and keep a list. If you get stuck refer to the list.

Do not always try and demonstrate every piece of your display unless it is absolutely necessary. Pick out the favorites, play games in the middle, then invite guests to view and try the products on your display.

Use tools such as mapquest for mileage and time estimates for getting to a location. You will need the mileage for your taxes but the time estimate is extremely helpful. I personal use mapquest and a GPS application on my phone. This helps keep me on track and less likely to get lost.

Use a day planner of some sort. Keep contact info and a calendar handy at all times. Update this regularly. These can be digital or paper. Use the method that works for you but use it. I personally use 3. Yes I know its overkill to some but this ensures I always have an updated version at all times. I use outlook on my computer, my blackberry, and a day planner. I print out my outlook calendar and take to parties or meetings.

Do not overbook yourself in your schedule. This can and is a deal breaker in time management. Have specific slots open for meetings, deliveries, parties, and travel time. Giving yourself a set calendar will keep you from overextending yourself and keep your business on track.

Free Ad Space?

When starting a new business or just trying to keep it going, budgets are tight and you often wonder to the dark side of "free." Now before we get upset, hear me out on this one.

The problem free ads have is many people are doing the exact same thing. If everyone is just there to advertise, what are you accomplishing? Not all free ads produce these results but most do.

If you are going to take the opportunity to place a free ad, be sure you are getting results. Do no join free ad groups. These are usually a waste of time. Ones that are not are hard to find and still take more work than you will get in return.

Free ad space you want is:

When someone wants to post a WAHM Feature (such special promotions at Liv's WAHM Blog) or product review.
When newspapers offer free space to fill voids in their print.
When writing articles you include a byline at the end that includes a sentence or 2 about your business including website.
Social network business page where you interact with customers (check the social network TOS in regards to this prior to posting ads).
Email signatures where you can include your website or mini bio. Keep these short and sweet.
Forum groups where you can create and manage a group dedicated to teaching customers about your products and offer tips.
Managing a blog dedicated to your product/service.
Word of mouth. There is nothing better than a customer recommending you to a friend or family member.

These are just a few free ad spaces that are helpful in business building.

When looking for ad space, be smart about it. Don't place an ad just because its free.

Market Like you Game

I am guilty of indulging in fun games that appear on social networks. One thing I see every day is comments of how nobody is making money or out of ideas but nobody has a problem asking for a tree for their farm. If you can share and exchange for entertainment, why not employ those same tactics in business?

Now let break this down a bit. You send everyone a request to be neighbor or for a special tool needed for a game. Does everyone respond? Those that do you continue to do "game" business with right? You may even pass on their name to others to help them gain levels and friends correct? Guess what!? You are networking! It wasn't as hard as you thought previously now was it?

Everyone you invite to play doesn't respond just as in business. Everyone you introduce to your business does not become a customer. You invest in those you have introduced and show interest.

How do you use these in business? Start with what most in business have; business cards. You pass out business cards to those interested. Don't force a card on those not interested. Its a waste of your time and theirs. Just politely thank them for their time and either move on to another subject or excuse yourself.

Next are catalogs. There is no need to leave the latest makeup catalog in areas where only men frequent. You are wasting your money. This does not mean never do this but only when its appropriate. This goes for flyers as well.

Parties. Most people love to attend gatherings. They do not however enjoy a 2 hour sales pitch. Keep presentations short, offer product they can see and demo, interact with customers one on one. Do not attempt to recruit every single person at your party. Its unrealistic and can create awkward moments. I suggest having guests complete a simple questionnaire either on an order form (this is best) or a door prize drawing slip (great to file for late contacts). Those interested in joining, schedule an appointment one on one so they have your undivided attention. Do the same at events. Its ok to give initial information but get that appointment so you can answer all their questions.

If everyone marketed their business with the same passion and drive as they do games, more would create the success they desire.

No more excuses

Over the years I hear many excuses - I can't do parties, my company didn't teach me that, my customer wants this so I can't sell to that one, my company doesn't offer that. Excuse, excuse, excuse. There are others with the exact same company, with the exact same products, and the exact same opportunity and are successful. So throw out the excuses and start owning up to your business.

There are no excuses in business. You either do or don't. If you make a mistake, say so. Don't explain how you had no sleep, your child was sick all night, and your computer has 10 thousand viruses, and your dog ran away. Excuses only lead to more. You feel better about them and feel others are ok with it so they breed more excuses. This is when I call someone an excuse addict. You can't stop and even live for them even if only subconsciously.

Don't let excuses ruin your business and your name. You may think it directly affects only you but it doesn't. It can affect an entire business. You may represent Widget World but because of you and your lack of ability to correct an issue customers will not return to Widget World. Example how this works - ever gone to a restaurant and received bad service? Ever decided to not return due to the bad service? The restaurant didn't do anything wrong. It was the service yet you were so turned off you didn't give them a second chance. Same with the WAHM world. Avoid the excuses, own up to responsibility, stop giving you and your business lower value, and start being professional.

If your company doesn't offer it, create an alternative. If your company doesn't teach it, learn it elsewhere. If you can't do parties then find a creative way to get out there in front of your customers. Overcome the obstacle not create an excuse. The more excuses, the more failure.

Once you free yourself of the excuse addiction you will set a path towards success.

Goals Are Dreams Written Down

When you have big dreams, write them down. Don't be afraid of them. Don't be afraid to dream big.

If I asked you how much you want to make this year, would you choose:

a) $10,000
b) $25,000
c) $100,000
d) $500,000

You should have chosen e) none of the above. Always want more!

Don't settle for the choices someone else gives you. Create your own choices, dreams, and goals.

Dreams cost nothing. Goals cost nothing. So go for the gold!

A life without purpose is like a ship without a rudder. The purpose of a goal is to focus your attention. Your mind will reach toward achievement only when it has a goal.

There is no achievement without goals. If you have no direction, how can you find success? Don't expect to stumble upon it.

Know what your goals are and break them down to smaller goals. See where you are in 1 month, 3 months, 6 months.

Always have something ahead of you. Keep moving after you achieve your goals and set new ones. Momentum is maintained by always having something to look forward to. If you host parties, how many guests bring a child? In my experience I can count on at minimum of 1 child per party. Carry with you coloring books, puzzles, crayons, or any other small activity. If old enough you can even have that child help! Keeping that child interested not only allows mom to shop but also gives you a child that had just a good of time as the other guests!

Invest in Yourself

To build a successful business you MUST invest. There is no getting around this. Go half at it or cut corners and I will show you a half business with lots of mistakes and a date of doom.

It's OK to invest in yourself and your business through education, tools to make your work easier, etc. Try and find even one successful business out there that has had zero dollars ever invested in it. There aren't many. You have to invest in business cards, classes, and sacrifice. There is no such thing as fast money and you do nothing to earn it.

Invest in yourself and others will invest in you as well. They will see the time and money invested because you took the time to invest in yourself lending to your success. You will be knowledgeable, prepared, organized.

You will have to learn new skills and habits. Just like when you became a mom for the first time. You learned new skills and habits you never thought you could. You realized that you have a lot to learn and change in order to be a good mother. This is the same in business. You learn new skills to be a better business person and successful.

You will have to educate yourself if you don't want to be one of those that struggles constantly with their finances. You can't expect to just sign up for the latest make money idea and expect the checks to start rolling in automatically. Attend webinars, study those handbooks your company offers, take a marketing and accounting class at the local college.

Take the time to create success. You will find it was well worth the effort.

Closing The Sale

You started your business and it has started great. Problem is you may not be getting the sales you are hoping for. Are you closing the sale or waiting for the sale?

Lets talk about closing the sale. You can have a great opening, great middle, but forget you have to close the sale. If you don't close you are leaving it open without moving the sale along. This is not push sales. This is following through. Not every close will get the sale but your sales will increase.

Closing a sale is many times assuming your customer is wanting the product/service you offer. You present your product and ask them what color they would like to order, service they want to start with, matching item they want to pair.

In closing the sale you want to avoid being passive. This doesn't mean you have to be overwhelmingly aggressive. You are just focused on getting the sale and helping the customer make the most of their purchase.

At the end of the sale do not ask if they would like to order. Assume they do and ask what they want and be specific.

Lets say you sell candles. You approach the customer with the product and why its best. You proceed with "Mary, what is your favorite scent? Great scent, did you want to order a jar or a dozen votives"? If they do not want to order either they will give you their objection and give you the opportunity to overcome it.

Listening is very important to closing the sale. Do not focus on selling one thing and one thing only. Focus on fulfilling the customer's needs and closing the sale based on these needs.

So when closing you need to remember a few things:

Do not be afraid of the word no. You may get a no for various reasons. Listen or ask why the no. It may be they are interested in another item, different color, no finances. Even with no finances offer the customer a way to earn it for free. Even if you have no reward program, create one. If they have their friends buy 10 candle jars in total your customer gets one for free. If you sell makeup have their friends buy a total of 10 lipsticks and they can earn 1 for free. There is always a way to overcome an objection and close the sale.

Upsale your close. If the customer orders a purse, offer a wallet. Fast food restaurants do this everyday when they ask if you want fries or a drink.

If you get a no after overcoming objections, don't keep pushing. Some sales gurus may have a difference of opinion here but you don't want to make your customer uncomfortable and leave with buyers remorse. This will not give you a loyal return customer.

Sales is relationship building. Getting to know your customer is key when closing the sale. If you don't get to know your customer you will not be able to close the sale effectively.

The best closers in the world are children. They are completely focused on the prize and will reason with you until they get what they want. Watch and listen to children. You will learn a lot from them.

In a group setting one no does not mean the entire group will say no. Many times a group will talk those no's into a yes.

Keep the customer comfortable and the conversation professional.

Write down a few closes. Start with a one product and ask friends and family to give you reasons to not want the product or service. Even go as far as asking what will turn that no into a yes. Practice overcoming the objections and perfecting your close.

Don't stress if your close is not perfect. Keep practicing. It will becoming habit and you will be comfortable as you go along.

Keep pursing your business and the sales will come.

One Step At A Time

Success is one step at a time. It is not overnight and not without work. For some it is more than they are willing to give. If you want to start at the top you will need to dig a hole.

Everyone who got where they are now had to begin at the bottom. Don't look at where a successful persons is now. Look at where they were and how they go to where they are now. You will see sacrifice, hard work, and dedication.

Your opportunity for success is right in front of you. You just have to learn to recognize it when you see it. In the beginning you will create your own opportunities rather than wait for the opportunity. As you grow and learn you will begin to seize opportunities. Never wait for an opportunity. If you wait, it will pass you by not realizing it has.

To attain success or to reach your goal, don't worry about having all the answers in advance. You just need to have a clear idea of your goal and move toward it. The answers will follow as you move forward.

Don't procrastinate when faced with a difficult problem. You have to face a problem to solve it. Break your problems into smaller parts and handle each part at a time. You will be surprised how easy and quickly you can overcome these. Break your biggest goals into small steps and take the first step right away. The longer you wait to make the first step the more likely you are to fail. Success starts with a first step.

You can make something happen today. You just have to get out there and make it happen. Don't wait for it to happen. If you wait, you will always wait while others propel themselves ahead of you.

Do you hold home parties? Recycle those old real estate signs. Contact a local real estate office or a sign shop and ask about old real estate signs. Revamp them to note where a party is. Most have a plastic container that holds flyers. Next time you have a home party, yours or a hostess, take the sign and post for guests to easily find. Attach balloons to make these noticeable and fill with flyers so others can take one as they pass by.

Finding the Right Sponsor

Finding the right sponsor is just as important as finding the right company. Finding the wrong sponsor can set the tone of a failed business regardless of how great the company is.

How can you learn from a sponsor who is unknowledgeable or only cares about the added commission?

Now you may be a go-getter and willing to take the bull by the horns but without direction and support you can lose motivation, become misguided or misinformed, learn bad habits, or even have an unfair opinion of a company based on your sponsor.

There are 2 ways you will have come to have a sponsor with your new business - you will either choose one or be assigned one.

When you choose one its is because you have had a conversation with and willing to join the team of the consultant who's team you will be part of. When you are assigned a sponsor this is because you have decided to join a company but not had a conversation with a consultant and willing to join their team.

When joining a company I highly recommend going in with a sponsor rather than joining blindly. When you choose your sponsor you have already established a relationship and rapport.

Regardless of whether you choose or are assigned a sponsor, this person will benefit financially from your successful sales. They receive compensation as your support. This is a job not a free ride. This is why you must choose the right sponsor for you.

When thinking about joining don't automatically go with your best friend. Your friend may have just joined for the discount and not interested in building a business while you are interested in a full-time business.Business and friendship are not one in the same. These are separate and you must have a business mind here. This is not saying don't join a friend. This just means choose wisely and choose the path that will secure the most successful path in your new venture.

Here are a few tips to choosing the right sponsor:

You will want to choose a person who is compatible with you. Someone you get along with and feel good about. Sometimes you just know.

You will want to interview more than 1 potential sponsor to find one that you believe is right for you.

Choose someone with similar goals. If your goal is to replace a full-time income and/or build a large team, a sponsor who joined the company to get a discount on the products is probably not the best mentor for you. You want a sponsor with similar goals who can share what has or hasn't worked for her.

You will want to choose a sponsor to mentor you based on the level of experience you desire. If you do not want someone brand new, do not select a sponsor that is new. If you are brand new to direct sales you will want a mentor who has been with the company for more than 1 year who has the ability to help you in ways you will need help.

During your interview of potential sponsors you will want to ask if they offer continued support and training. Some choose to get you started then let you run with it will others continually mentor regardless of your success.

How you plan to market your business can also be a determining factor when choosing the right sponsor. If you plan to market and build a team offline you will want to choose a sponsor who is local rather than our of state. Having a sponsor who is local can be beneficial with parties, one on one training. If you choose to build your business strictly online you can benefit from a sponsor that is long distance. These sponsors have learned the tricks of the trade when it comes to online marketing.

Some sponsors will offer their own incentive when joining their team. While this may be enticing you have to stick to the goal at hand, finding the right sponsor for your success.

If the sponsor you choose decides to leave the company, what will happen to you? Will you move to your upline's sponsor? If so you may want to talk with their sponsor as well to ensure the you have the right fit.

Will you be interacting with a team in a regular basis? Learn about the team and the dynamics of the team. Something as simple as the team is filled with young mothers while you are the lone grandmother can give you a sense of not belonging. It has nothing to do with whether or not they make you feel this way.

Don't let a sponsor sell you into a business you are not comfortable with. If you feel pressured you will not start on the right foot. Join when you are ready and when it feels right. Go with your instincts.

Starting out on the right foot is one step closer to success.

Tips for Effective Networking

Networking can be very effective in building your business if done right. Networking needs to be consistent regardless if you are networking online or offline.

Networking takes place in everyday life. If you need a new doctor you ask a friend or you when you need a new hairdresser. This is networking

Here are a few basics when it comes down to networking.

Networking is NOT about selling your business or products to everyone you meet. It is about gaining contacts and getting your name out there.

Don’t come on too strong the first time you meet new people. People are put off when you are overly aggressive. Relax and speak casually yet professionally.

Share about yourself, not just your business. You want to build a relationship and not just be a walking ad 24/7. People do business with people they know and trust.

Ask people what they do and invite them to share about themselves and their business. Showing genuine interest and not making it all about "me" makes you likeable and someone others want to do business with.

Listen more than you talk and ask questions that will get people talking. This will be done in return as well so don't worry you are talking about everyone else and you never come up.

Ask for their business card. Getting the business card allows you to follow up. You can exchange cards if you wish but always get their card or if online, their email or IM name. Ask permission to contact them again. If you don't ask you will spam them. Nobody likes being invaded.

Make notes on things contacts offer that might be useful to yourself or others. Keep index cards on hand to make notes and file the business card with the index card. This is also great to make note if a contact makes mention of an occasion coming up such as a birthday or anniversary. This gives you a reason to pick up the phone and make a call.

Find common ground with the person you’re getting to know. If you both enjoy wine tasting, you have something to talk about other than business. If you have nothing in common you may not be comfortable talking to this person outside of business. That can make the contact awkward so find that common ground.

If asked what you do don’t give someone a long sales pitch. Keep it short and informative. This is where your mini commercial comes in. This is a 20-30 second explanation of what you do, why you love it, and shows your enthusiasm.

Always tell the person you were talking with it was a pleasure meeting them and ask if it is ok if you add them to your contact list. The worst thing you can do is add them without permission and insult them. Never burn bridges.

Don't file your contacts away never to be heard from again. Use them when you need something. Refer them when someone else needs them. If you don't use or refer their services they will forget about you. When you refer someone, tell them to mention your name such as "tell them Olivia from So Chic Bag Boutique referred you." This will remind them of who you are and not just a name.

Keep it professional. Watch your language. Offensive language will not be tolerated and you will be tossed to the side. People want to do business with professionals.

If you do it right networking and propel your business in the right direction.

As a WAHM we tend to grab food on the go. Most times these are unhealthy snacks and meals. Those unhealthy snacks and meals equal unwanted pounds. Have healthy snacks on hand throughout the day. The night before while making dinner or lunches for the next day, prepare healthy meals for yourself. Opt for cut fresh fruit, veggies, and cheese. Create a healthy salad and use the meat from the night before on your salad. Have several bottles of water available daily and skip the soda. If its not in reach, its not convenient.

Go for the Goal

As a WAHM building a business, at the top of your list is your goals. Your goals are your foundation and direction in which your business moves forward and build. Without goals you will wander in every direction but forward.

When thinking about your goals, these need to be realistic. What are realistic business goals? A realistic goal is what you should be able to meet with persistence and hard work. This does not mean keep them simple. Challenge yourself but make sure you are aware of the achievable limits of these goals. An example of an unrealistic goal is making a million dollars and live debt free within 1 year. A realistic goal is to make enough money to pay for your mortgage payment using your profits after 1 year.

If you meet that goal, go back and set a new goal. Once your achieve a goal, your goal setting is not over. You should always be setting and striving to achieve goals. If you achieve a goal early, great! Move on to the next.

Why should you set business goals? Setting goals give you focus and a reason for being in business in the first place. It does not matter whether you are selling your homemade candles or you have just become the new beauty consultant in your neighborhood for an up and coming company.

When beginning to think about your goals, think short term. Take baby steps. You can't go from the bottom to over the top over night. Do it right and do it right the first time. Start with how much you would like to earn each month. Now remember to keep this realistic. There is no such thing as fast money in an honest business. Lets start with $100 a month. This number sounds very reasonable and less intimidating. Make it more attainable by breaking it down further to weekly. In this case it would be $25 a week. Maybe your weekly or monthly goal will be sponsoring a new member to your team or courting a new customer even breaking out of your shell and meeting new people and giving out your card. If you are in a home party plan you goal could be 1 party booking a week at bare minimum. Your goals are anything you will achieve to build a flourishing business.

Now that you have your short term goal, how are you going to achieve this? Time to make a list. This is where that notebook I have mentioned time and time again comes in. How many new people will you approach? Will you host a party that week? This is the time to be honest with yourself and know what you will and will not do to achieve those goals. The only thing between you and your achievement is you.

While you are thinking about and setting your short term business goals, you also want to keep in mind the long term business goals. I suggest starting with looking at 6 months ahead and 1 year ahead. What kinds of goals would you like to have met in your business in 6 months and at 1 year? Can you see yourself obtaining these goals? Start with 1 year and write down all the things you wish to accomplish at this point in time during that first year. Once you have your 1 year goals, break it down to 6 months.

By now you should have weekly, monthly, a 6 month goal, and a 1 year goal. Don't write them down to never be seen again. Put these on your calendar. Refer to them often. Look over them from time to time and modify anything that may have changed. Make new goals to replace goals achieved. Never go a day without having a goal. If at any time you miss a goal, don't beat yourself up over it. Accept it, learn from it, keep moving.

Stay On Task

Staying ong task is a challenge aat some point in time as a WAHM. Some worse than others but you need to find ways to work through it. I know do several things I should not just because I can be easily distracted. You just have to be aware of it and get back ontrack asap. I might find a typo on my website then realize I need to call a supplier about a shipment coming in which will lead me to remember its my mothers birthday then I have to do grocery shopping and back around again.

Here is a few tips to staying on task:

Create a task list on Sunday evening of all of your projects and deadlines for the week. Do not just leave this on our computer calendar. Write this down somewhere that you look often such as a desk calendar. The constant reminder helps keep you on task.

List your goals for the week. This should always be part of your weekly schedule of tasks. Having your short term goals listed keeps you in forward motion to accomplishing these. Make sure these are on mark to reaching montly and quarterly goals.

Create a schedule of the above in blocks of time. Stick to this. If you get distracted you know where you need to return based on your block of time scheduled.

Turn off the instant notification on your e-mail. This allows you to only receive emails when you are ready to read and respond to them them properly. Constantly checking email as a notification pops up takes away valuable time.

Use an egg timer to keep you conscious of time. Your will be surprised how quick time passes when you are made aware of time. Reset the timer for each block of time that passes and stick to your time schedule. This can be difficult at first but you will find you manage time better.

If you would not do it on the clock for someone else, don't do it on your own time clock. It is easy to get off task and run errands but keep those to your break times.

As a WAHM it is easy to get distracted with typical home noise. Keep the t.v. off. If you must see the show, tape it, dvr, or something but no t.v. while working.

Do not overfill your plate with tasks for the week. Too many projects will take you off task. Yes you have a lot to accomplish but overdoing it will not get it done. What it will do is create an exhausted you whom won't even be able to handle the tasks you would normally be able to.

Staying on task is work but as you become aware it will become habit for the most part. Business is every changing so it will never stop taking effort. It will just get easier as you find what works for you.

Achievement Takes Time

"Keep trying" is the rule that must be followed to be successful at anything.

Your success will always be connected with your actions. What you do today brings your one step closer or further from your goals. Just keep moving towards your goal.

You'll make mistakes but don't ever quit. We are human. You will learn from these mistakes. You may even have to hang on after others have let go.

Persistence means taking pains to overcome every obstacle, to do all that's necessary to reach your goal. In the end, the only people who fail are those that do not try.

Your future is a big adventure.
Just remember, all great achievement takes time.

Party To Go

Often when you're having a home party, there will be guests who would love to host a party of their own, but can't. Perhaps they're moving, their spouse won't allow it, they just don't have enough space in their home, or they are simply uncomfortable.

Give them the option of having a party in a basket. A party to go! This can work for almost any business you have such as candles, makeup, jewelry, food, tea, purses, and toys.

Here is what you can do:

Gather a selection of your lower to mid priced and popular items, package it so that the products look attractive but visible. Try organza or cellophane bags.

Make sure everything is priced and has an item number attached to it.

Arrange it all in an attractive basket. A large basket is best but keep it from being too heavy. You don't want to discourage your hostess. Keep the basket and fillers neutral so the product stands out. If the products are neutral do the reverse and add in colorful filler.

Enclose a typed-up inventory list which includes the item numbers and prices.

Have the hostess sign for the inventory in the basket, especially if you have included some expensive items. This not only protects your hostess but also yourself. Go over the inventory and count with the hostess before she signs. This also makes her aware of the products she has with her.

When going over the inventory sheet, educate your hostess. Not only will she know what she has but she will be able to answer basic questions.

Having an inventory list for each basket allows the hostess to not only keep track of what is in the basket but also allows her to sell the product immediately (only if you have this available). Have a check list on your inventory sheet so your hostess can check off items purchased. Make sure the hostess understands whether she can sell the items in her party to go basket or not. You do not want to sell important demo pieces because of a misunderstanding.

Also include catalogs, opportunity and hostess brochures, and business cards. Ladies love to look at catalogs or maybe they wish to share. Don't forget the male guests. Send them home with these.

If your business has samples available, include them. This allows party to go guests to take something home and try before they buy. Sometimes a guest is passing by quickly and does not have time at that moment to browse. Pass them a sample and let them know how long you will have the wonderful products available.

Have a basket or 2 available at home parties and invite potential hostesses to take a basket that day. Your hostess can keep the basket for 1-2 weeks to gain sales towards their hostess rewards program.

At the end of the party to go time frame, collect the inventory sheet, additional orders, money collected, and the basket. Tally the hostess shopping credit and allow your hostess to begin her shopping.

This is a great way to sell old or final stock. Make sure to note these are the last of the stock so these are not over-ordered.

Parties never have to be limited. Get creative and accommodate your hostesses needs.

Create an Office

As a WAHM you are in business. To stay organized you need an area to do your work. Working at the dinner table or on the couch and coffee table is not an office. You need a dedicated space.

Not everyone has the luxury of an empty room but you can make yourself a corner of a room and turn that into your office. This should have a desk, pens, pencils, folders, computer, file cabinet or portable file folder box (can buy one at your local discount store for about $10). This is where you do all your work. This is where you make your calls, keep your schedule (a wall or desk calendar is best so you have instant access).

A small shelf with product, a basket for brochures or catalogs, business cards, samples, is very helpful. This can be your mini demo area when clients stop by.

Once a week take a few minutes to organize your area. Remove clutter, file loose papers, or anything else that needs to be done to keep your area tidy.

Purchase a comfortable chair. You want a place to sit and work comfortably.

Keep it simple. A work area with a lot going on can feel overwhelming. If you feel overwhelmed you will not want to work.

Do not eat at your desk. This is an easy habit to get into and we all do it at some point. The biggest reason you want to eat away from the desk is you need to take a break.

Keep office hours and work only in your work space. Being a WAHM it is easy to overwork. Keep to a schedule and close shop when it is time.

Where Does Your Support Come From?

Starting a business is hard enough. Starting a business from home can be worse. You no longer have anyone to answer to. You are the boss. Having support is still required. Where does your support come from?

A supportive family and spouse can be hard to come by at first for many people. They may eventually come around but getting them on board is important. This is where a well laid out plan comes in. Not just ideas in your head but written down and worked out. This is regardless whether you are turning a hobby into a business or you are going to be a distributor for your favorite direct sales company.

For some without the support can be a deal breaker. How do you plan to deal with this? Have you thought about this yet? It is not something we want to think about but it can happen. You need to be prepared.

Support can leave down the road as well. Some may be experiencing this. Not to worry. Try inviting them into a day in your life. Show them what you do in a day and have them assist you. Let them see what you do. Some of the non-support comes from the not knowing. The more they know the better the chance you have at gaining or regaining their support.

Sit down with your spouse and discuss your new venture. Make sure to answer their questions and address their concerns. Just keeping your spouse in the loop is all you need to get continued support.

Every day you must do one thing to bring you closer to your success. That one thing should be making a new contact. Each new contact brings you closer to the sale you desire.

Whether you work from home or away you can't achieve success without doing something today that works towards that goal. Carry business cards and pass out one a day. If you do not get out everyday, make a solid contact every day online. Join networking groups. Meet someone new.

Make it your short term goal to make one step each day towards your goal.

Have extra magazines laying around? Donate them to a office with a lobby. Add a large label to the front of the magazine with "Donated by" and include your name, business info, and contact information. Add a small pocket on the inside cover and place business cards inside. Donate these to your local Dr's office, lobby for your local tire, oil change, or mechanic shop, vets office, salon, or even a teachers lounge. Don't have any magazines? Ask family and friends to save these for you and pick them up.

Clothespin Game

Blogging Tips

I have come across some amazing blogs and I applaud those people for such great care and effort. I am always amazed at what is chosen as a topic and even more amazed at the facts presented for the education of their readers.

While I have come across some that are great, I thought I would offer a few helpful tips to those who are new and need a place to start.

1. Give readers a way to follow easily. Adding Google Friend Connect allows readers to stay abreast on the latest posts. While subscriptions and RSS feeds can help, you want to understand why you would use these.

RSS: This is a type of subscription that is used with a feed reader allowing readers to view all updates on various sites in one place (not exclusive to blogs)
Email Subscription: Sends notifications of new blog posts to subscribers email address.
Google Friend Connect: Allows readers to use Google Reader or Blogger dashboard to read latest blogs
Bookmark: This bookmarks a page for the reader to visit at their will
Networked Blogs: Allows readers on Facebook to follow blogs and receive Facebook updates on new blog posts. This tool is for Facebook only.
Social Networks: Some social networks allow you to connect your blog to your profile to update readers on current blog postings. This is usually an RSS feed.

2. Frequently add posts. At minimum post 3 times a week. Blogs that are not maintained can lose their readers.

3. Keep away from building a blog that is just one long ad. While you may be trying to sell a product you need to use your blog platform as a teaching tool. Blogs that are viewed as ads are not enticing and send readers away.

4. Proof read those posts. A simple slip happens but frequent spelling and grammar mistakes can be a turn off.

5. Find your niche. If you want to write about movies, pick types of movies such as family or romance. You can even get more specific from there.

6. Keep your blog clean and uncluttered. To many things going on at once makes it hard to read.

7. Customize your template. Using a free template provided by your blog host is not as attractive and does not set you apart from others. Do a search for templates such as "blogger templates". You can purchase a template or create your own.

These are just a few tips to get you started.

Purse ABC's

Bring a bag of candy with you to the party (Hershey Kisses, etc.).

Tell guests not to eat the candy during the game. Call a letter of the alphabet, and the first person to SHOW an item from their purse representing that letter wins a candy.

Each person who wins, gets a piece of candy; the person with the most candy at the end of the game is the winner.

Only use about 8-10 letters or so, then stop the game and do your party demonstration.

You can play the second half of the game (the remaining letters) at the end of the demonstration, but this time the guests must ask you questions about your career and company to earn a piece of candy. Imagination counts. It could be a description of an item, the brand name, color, etc.

You'll notice that the same things can be called different names, but they all work for this game. It's a lot of fun to see what people think of when you call a letter. Sure to bring you lots of laughs

Get Organized

Like many WAHMs out there, you are doing your best to bring in a consistent and valuable income. The trend in the WAHM world of consultant and affiliate programs is an overwhelming amount of memberships to companies. The more you join, the more versatile your product offering, the more people visit your businesses, and the more money you will bring in right? While affiliate marketing (signing up for several affiliate programs) and/or starting several part-time consultant programs sound like the right path, this can spell your demise if you are not careful.

The most common thing we do is take all of our affiliate/consultant programs and place those banners all on a free website. After all placing these all on one website gives us a one stop shop that customers will love. They can find all they need in one place. That's why you joined so many right?

We join or start a business for many reasons but the main goal is money. Whether full-time or part-time you are in it for the money. Now you may be thinking how can signing up for so many spell my demise? Ask yourself this, do you place your links on a website and send out text ads and links to that site for people to view? What is on that site that will make people want to buy? You are ultimately sending them to a site that will redirect them away from your site. You are telling them go elsewhere to purchase. Does this make sense? This is network marketing and without a full knowledge and understand of this you will fail.

The idea behind joining several consultant and/or affiliate programs is great but many times you end becoming overwhelmed. You never give your businesses the right amount of attention which in turn never gives them a chance to grown and blossom into a fruitful venture.

If you decide to take on a few companies, get organized. This is essential to your growing businesses. First thing you need to do is create a schedule. Know how much time you are willing to give your businesses each day. This is important. You need to give your attention to your businesses 5 days a week. The term make your own hours does not mean just whenever you feel like it or when you decide you have time. You need to make time. Make a list of all that needs to be done everyday and get on that schedule. Find a minimum of 2 hours a day Monday through Friday for 1 business, 1 hour for each business after. These time suggestions are just minimum suggestions. Your real time requirements can be far more. Avoid the trap of 30 minutes here and there. When you do this it is very easy to push it off and even skip it. Find solid time. Make the time. You can't build a successful business if you don't give your business time.

Create a folder on your computer desktop labeled "My Business". On your desktop is the best place because this is always in view when you sit down and easily accessible. In your main folder create a sub folder for each business labeled with the business name. This is where you will store all pertinent information about each business including files. In each business sub folder create folders for customer lists, product info, account info, business templates (business cards, flyers, etc). Next make a list of all your businesses and store in your main folder. Note any requirements for each business as well. I suggest an excel file (if you are in need of a template, contact me for information). This gives you a quick reference guide.

If you are a WAHM with more than 5 businesses a strict schedule will be crucial to your success. You will need a daily outline of duties. While you may have decided to become a WAHM for the flexible schedule this does not mean you will be without one. Each day dedicate time to each business. A minimum of 1 hour a day per business. This is more than just advertising. This may be researching, learning about the products, planning a party, etc. If you have too many businesses to dedicate 1 hour a day, it is time to weed out the businesses that do not work for you. Stick to 2-3 at most.

Create a work space. This is important. Using the kitchen table is not a work space. Ideally an extra room is best so you can close the door after working hours. At minimum you need a corner of a room with your desk, computer, business supplies, and file cabinet. This is the only place you do work and this space is used for nothing else.

Take time to create a budget. Know your business needs and how to promote your business. How much can you spend each month without commissions. Know how you plan to spend that budget. Break it down per business and stick to it. Keep a tally on all expenses made with each business during the calendar month to stay on top of expenses.

Each week look over your previous weeks work and be sure you are staying organized. Clean your desk area to keep it from getting out of control.

Take a the extra steps to get organized and stay organized will help keep things running smoothly. Staying organized allows you a place to refocus when you get off track.

Many cell phone companies are beginning to offer navigation applications for your cell phone. These are very useful when getting directions to host parties, deliver product, or even find your way to the vendor fair. Not only will you get directions but you can calculate distance for mileage cost (tax purposes) and time estimates to ensure you will arrive in a timely manner. Check with your cell phone company and add this to your plan.

Take Some "Me" Time

As a WAHM its hard to separate work from personal. You are always on the go taking care of everything. At times you can and do forget about you. Its important to take some "me" time.

At minimum take one day a month dedicated to you. Do a little shopping, get a pedicure, visit a coffee shop and read a book, take in a dinner and movie with friends. Pamper yourself. Just do something that is about you.

Leave the kids at home. If dad can't take care of them, hire a babysitter. Having a me day with the kids is not taking "me" time. That is quality family time. Its not the same.

Don't feel selfish. You have to take care of you before you can take care of everyone else. The world will not fall apart because you took time out for you once in awhile.

There are no short cuts

Where the rumor started doesn't matter but the reality is there is no short cuts in business. Whether you are a consultant or business owner you have to work and build a business. There is no fast money.

Don't rush a business into making money quickly. Most times you will fail in some aspect such as customer service, product viability, and ultimately sales. Take your time to get organized.

Before you begin your business have a plan. Why are you selling what you are? What is your goal in selling your product or service? What are you goals in 5 yrs for your business? How do you plan to price your product or service? Is your pricing competitive? What is your target? How do you plan to advertise?

Starting a business is tough but with the right planning it can and will be fruitful. Don't cut corners. Do it right and do it right the first time. You will save yourself a lot of trouble from the start.

Pass the Gift

Use an inexpensive gift, such what ever your business can offer to the guest, (under $5 or $10)

Start by giving the gift to the hostess or person in the middle of the group and the game begins!

1. Take this gift and with out a sigh look around and give it to a person with brown eyes.

2.Yes, you are the lucky one for the moment, but let us all share in the fun! Please look around with eyes discreet and give it to the one with the smallest feet.

3. Your feet are tiny and oh so small, now hand it to someone very tall.

4. Please take your time and don't be harried. Give it to the one who is longest married.

5. You must be proud of your life, now please pass this to the newest wife.

6. Of this parcel you are bereft, give it to the one on your left.

7. The largest earrings I'm looking for now, if you are wearing them, step up and bow.

8. Now to the person with buttons... big or small, any kind, the most you can find, gets the gift this time.

9. Now don't get cross and please don't fight, but pass it to the person 3rd on your right.

10. We should stop now, don't you agree?This gift is yours to keep with glee!!!!

This is a great ice-breaker and really sets the tone for a party.

You need a plan to find success. Wanting success isn't sufficient enough to get it. You have to create a plan of action of work towards success. Ask yourself, "What are you going to do to get the things you want."

Before you begin, what is your definition of success? Maybe it is having a big house. Maybe it means making a million dollars. Maybe it is selling 5 products a month. Success is different for everyone so define success for you.

Know what it is you want. Write it down. Once you have a direction you need to create a path. That path is what you are going to do to obtain the success you desire.

The obstacle you must overcome is to bridge the gap which exists between where you are now and where you want to be. This is where your plan of action comes in. You can't avoid having a plan. Trying to "wing it" will only hold you down.

Your plan of action should be a step by step plan. You cannot fail with a definite step by step plan. Each step you take will carry you along to the next step. All you need is the plan, the path to follow, and the courage to move forward towards your goals.

Create an office space. This should be strictly for work and not a combined place of use. You want this space dedicated to work so it is not overrun with family life. This can be a corner of a room or an entire room. Do all your work in this space and make it clear this is your work space.

The Recruiting Game

This game is designed to help you identify hot prospects. My belief is that any game you play should not only be an ice-breaker, but also designed to point you to potential recruits.

The first step is to assemble three Opportunity Gift Bags. To assemble the gift bags gather all the information you have on your opportunity, then add some special touches, including a gift. The gift can be anything that has visual appeal – a bar of chocolate, a fun gift you found at a dollar store or sale, or one of your own products purchased on special (do not over-spend on these bags. Presentation is the key.) Make sure you use fun gift bags so they have strong visual appeal and display them up front with you. This has two benefits. First, they will remind you that you have to find three people to give the gift bags to, and second, they will generate curiosity and a desire to ‘win’ one.

Next, introduce the game at the beginning of your party. Show the gift bags and tell guests that you are going to play a game. The winner will receive one of the gift bags.

Guests are invited to award themselves points as you call out the following categories:

* One point for each party you have been to in the last two years
* Two points for each party you have been to in the last six months
* Five points if you have ever hosted a party
* Double those points if you hosted a party in the last six months
* Five points if anyone has ever approached you about joining the business
* Ten points if you seriously considered it
* Ten points if you have ever been a Consultant or Representatives for a direct selling company

As you read out statements, guests award themselves points for party attendance, hosting a party etc. This exposes the best prospects to give your business opportunity gift bag to, because those who attend parties and host parties are by far your best prospects. They have basically qualified themselves.

You can make up the points as you go, depending on the group (you want to find a winner so you have to adapt to your audience). But here is a guide:

The guest with the most points wins. Be sure you have that guest’s information so you can follow up in a few days.

Establish consistent office hours. This might be difficult in the beginning. Its tough for family to understand that just because you are at home you are still working. Your office hours should be the same time every day. Even when you feel ill you still need to be at work. If you must, create a sign that clearly indicates you are in fact working and even post your office hours.

Pass or Play

This is a great way to get those parties. You have them thinking throughout the presentation so bring them to their decision now.

"Ladies, check out these beautiful coin purses/goodie bags/mini totes I have. What I need you to do is pass this box/bag around and quickly choose a coin purse. Hold onto it but DO NOT open it yet."

"Ladies, the last thing we are going to do is play a real quick game called Pass or Play. I am simply going to ask each of you if you want to play or pass. If you would like to pass, simply put your coin purse/goodie bag/mini tote back in my box/bag and you are all done. If you would like to play, then you get to open the coin purse/goodie bag/mini tote and see what is inside for you. I'll make this real simple for you…I'll tell you what is inside…It says you have won a Featured Product! I'll even tell you what you will win. If you decide to play, you may win our top selling {Featured Product #1} (hold piece up), our adorable {Featured Product #2} or the customer favorite {Featured Product #3}! Now it really doesn't matter which one you win because when I come to your house to do your own personal show…you are going to get all this free and ½ price product (that you outlined in the hostess plan)."

Pause…"Now did everyone get that? If you decide to play then I get to come to your house and show your friends and family the products I've shown here tonight."

"When I met {Hostess} at {Previous Hostess} show, she decided to play and that's why we are here today/tonight. When she opened her coin purse/goodie bag/mini tote, she won the beautiful {Featured Product #1}". This can be yours next time.

Next, go around the room asking each guest if they would like to play. Ask and respond with a smile, "Thank You {their name}" whether they play or not. Always use their names. Start with someone that you already know is going to have a show or is really excited about the product. Never respond when they come up with an objection like I don't know many people, or my house is too small. Let the other guests talk her into it, not you! You simply keep smiling and wait for her decision. This shows that you are not going to pressure them.
